A lot of work should be doing valuation for complex derivatives for financial reporting purposes (year end, quarter end etc). Hence most of the work is doing an audit assist, where they need to value an instrument in their balance sheet to mark-to-market the value for reporting purpose. You will use Excel/VBA, MATLAB etc to develop models.
I don't know what your background is, but having a strong math and finance background will be important. A lot of people in the group has phd in cs/math or mfe.
Thanks for the info. I'm a CPA and my education background is plain vanilla accounting and finance. I am not really a quant/financial engineering type so I wonder if that will be a deal breaker.
I have an interview for the same position and it is case study interview. What do you think I can brush up on.
Some things you might want to be familiar with going into it: options, warrants, preferred and common stock in privately-held companies, management incentive plans, convertible bonds, financial derivatives, other contingent assets/ liabilities. Experience with Black Scholes, Monte Carlo simulation and Python help.
well if they are interviewing you, I am sure they want you cuz your accounting background (IFRS IAS 39 etc). At the end of the day, you need to understand the accounting to progress through the accounting firm. I think if you have bit of techinical knowledge and willing to learn the financial instruments, i think you should be fine.

A few of the Big 4 seem to post separate positions for complex securities valuation, different from the standard valuation role. The stated requirements are much more quantitative.
Thoughts on the work and compensation in these positions?
Those groups are usually split between derivatives/structured products and business valuations. Two different skill sets. Compensation tends to be higher on the derivatives/structured products side, but it all depends on the level you're coming in and the experience you have.

you probably won't do structured products. thats done by a specialized group within their structured finance advisory group
