Failed FT 2023 London - what now?

I have previously done internships in PE and IB. I failed to convert my M&A internship last summer due to headcount issues, and the PE internship I did was at an UMM firm in London with no option for conversion.

Will graduate with a MSc in Finance  soon from a target but have not been able to secure a FT offer yet. What should I do? Any firms still hiring? Should I try cold-calling? Mostly interested in M&A and PE analyst opportunities but Im willing to do everything atm

Don’t give up!

If you graduate without a FT then I would suggest using that time to network, intern, and simultaneously work on CFA/GMAT/whatever else may fit into that bucket.

I graduated without a FT offer and ended up having to do two internships before securing a FT. Having an internship after finishing school builds your resume as well as answers any resume-gap questions. Also, it could be leveraged into a FT depending on what your goals are. For me, I was set on BB banking so was not interested in FT offers from the two internships. However, they both helped me grow my professional circle substantially.

I would also grind networking like it is your everything. I sent out 10/15 LinkedIn messages a day and averaged 10 networking calls on a good week. This was ultimately what helped me break in, and I landed countless interviews/referrals through this. I know that networking is less impactful for jobs in the UK/EU, but at the least it grows your network and teaches you so much about a field. I had some interviews I barely had to prep for because I was networking so much that I knew the syntax of a field, who the big players were, major developments, ect. just from my networking calls.

Last thing that I would recommend is to use this time period to work towards CFA/GMAT or whatever else you wouldn’t have the time to pursue when you’re working FT. This is something I wish I pursued harder, but hopefully you can learn from my mistakes. This will keep you mentally sharp and keep you disciplined and structured.

Most important of all, keep your head up! You’re graduating into a horrible job market and don’t take your lack of FT offers personally. You are obviously a high achiever, and a FT offer WILL COME. You need to believe that, because it is the truth. When I was in your shoes I got so down on myself and neglected my physical mental health. It is a hard time but if you work hard you will have the biggest sense of accomplishment when the FT comes. Best of luck!
