Headhunters contacting SAs.

Hey monkeys,

I just wanted to hear the community's thoughts on whether this situation is commonplace or not.

I'm a current third year at a non-target starting my SA at a top M&A group within the next few weeks and updated my LinkedIn profile a couple weeks ago to add my new Bank/group/city/etc.

Anyway, a headhunter contacted me a couple days ago on LinkedIn, acknowledged that I won't be FT until 2012, but still asked if I would like to keep in touch for future PE/HF opportunities in 2014/2015.

I looked at the guys' contacts and he has page upon page of other top-group bankers, so I have little reason to believe he's disingenuous.

I suppose the crux of this post though is twofold:

1.) Is this guy for real? Is this when a lot of headhunters start connecting? or is this just a case of ridiculous talent speculation?

2.) If I want to go to a top PE fund after my analyst stint, should I ALREADY be thinking about that application? It seems so ridiculous, I literally haven't even started yet.

Relevant help is much appreciated.

-Julien

Never heard of headhunters targeting SAs but I have heard of this kind of thing happening for new FT analysts and it is for real. I have a friend who, just a few weeks after signing for S&T at a BB, got invitations to interview at PE firms. But, since you are an intern, I would do more research before taking him seriously.
