High GPA Finance major from an unknown Public University

Hi everybody,

First I want to thank you for such a great forum in which I can learn a lot about the finance world. Second, I'm rising junior from an unknown state university but i have high GPA (3.9+) Finance major and high GMAT (700+). Is it hard to get an interview for SA if you are not coming from a target school? I'm very appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

well i bet none of you've ever heard that name: Morehead State University, a state uni in Kentucky. I went here because it gave me a free ride through college, not bad for an international student.

that's not a state school per se, its just a public uni. but you are right, no one knows where that is. honestly, good luck- check out small banks in kentucky, tennesee and cincinatti (sp)

I'm trying to contact some of my alumni in NY so far but they did not seem very interested. I'm interested in getting an IB summer internship then MSF to rebrand my school name then try to land a FT offer.

Moorehead St. upset Louisville in the first round of the NCAA tournament. That had to have done something for name recognition. Your grades are wonderful. good luck!

Someone once told me that if a university has state in it, but isn't actually a state, then its kind of suspect.

Thanks to mention that, well if you are into ncaa or cheerleading or pre-med or space science you might hear my school name before but not finance especially wallstreet. I hope it's not a suspect, we won national cheerleading 9 years in a row. Girls here are hot :D

If you didn't win a game in the tourny I wouldn't have known it existed.

You can do it though homie.

Any related extracurricular activities? Sports?

Just as a rule of thumb, always post as much relevant information as you can without identifying yourself.

That's is my weakest point. I don't have any internship so far. I waste my freshmen year summer of taking summer classes and by the time I read this forum it's already past the recruitment deadline for this summer. I have 2 on-campus jobs. Math tutor and teaching assistants for some advanced math classes and Resident advisor for residence halls. I'm also joining my SIFE team, which just won regional conference and is going national soon, accounting club and Phi Beta Lambda. My school does not have an investment club or finance club :(

Dude I already knew that was your weakest point that's why I asked. You gotta accept it though. At the risk of sounding like an armchair quarterback I'm going to drop some game. You're wasting too much precious time on non-core sht. What is stopping you from starting up your investment club and be pres. Consider interning like a fiend at low-barrier-to-entry wealth management jobs -- during school obv -- some of them pay a bit which could help you replace non-core activities like Math tutoring, and even if they don't pay you can do like 1-2hrs / week which will at least pad your resume w some finance exp and show interest in the field, and not take too much time from work that pays (assume you need to work because you are shouldering tuition costs). Are you working with a prof on a paper/research? If not, do that and then list that too.

Thanks for your comment. I'm working with a Math/Econ professor on a research and I will list that for sure. And also, I will definitely consider your advice of creating a finance club. but I have like 6 months till the recruitment process starting again. I'll use that time to networking my ass of but I sent out a bunch of emails and Linkedin invitations without so many responses. Kind of feel frustrated sometimes.

I think my email was very sincere well maybe a little bit desperate but how long should I wait for one to response before I send another email. I really understand they are very busy and might want to wait until weekend or so to reply but I've waited for like a week. Should I even try to send another one since they might not be really interested in and I don't want to bother people too much.

Wow, looks like I've spent the entire NCAA tournament thinking Morehead State was in fact Morehouse College, that historically black college. My bad...

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.
