How / When To Call Back

Hi,

I am a senior in college passionate about a career in equity research. I have identified three companies (for sake of interest: Telsey Advisory Group, Wolfe Research, and Fred Alger Management) that have open research positions I believe I would be a great fit for. For two of them, through calling analysts and researching, I have identified the HR person to contact however after calling, leaving a message, and emailing them earlier this week I have not heard anything back.

My approach to my job search has been cold emailing, networking with Alum and on LinkedIn, and sending my resume directly in the mail. Just recently I tried calling as I know who I specifically want to reach. I would sincerely appreciate any any advice pertaining to when I should try again as well as as general advice about the companies I am interested in or about my techniques to find a job.

Thanks!

-James

Don't talk to HR. Have your contact at the firms give your resume to the appropriate person. If you contact HR you will be just a regular application but if the person at the firm says hey this person is awesome, you're already one step ahead.

Thanks for the responses. I have been reaching out to analysts and directors but have not had much luck on that end. What would you recommend for finding these decision makers at a firm and how would you go about contacting them?

Cold Emailing and snail mailing letters/resumes are the ticket and you're already doing those. My advice though is to DRAMATICALLY expand your targets. I'm rather proud of my networking successes, and my entire career can be attributed to networking, but overall I'm probably batting .012 if not worse. I'm talking sending out literally hundreds of emails.

Im probably batting worse haha. Thanks, will continue cold emailing.

Not saying you're doing it one way or another, but I got more successful when it dropped the pretention/cover letter feel of my emails. I think people appreciated bluntness and brevity.
