Introducing myself - Masters degree in finance
So I am pretty new to the website (created my account a while ago, but really just beginning to be a regular on here). There are a lot of good and experienced folks on here, sharing their thoughts and helping out, which is really good! Thank you!
I'd like to use this mean to introduce myself, so feel free to reach out to me should anyone have any questions. I'm currently temping at Morgan Stanley in Operations in a back office, a job I took as a way to "get my foot in the door as a big firm". Anyone here at Morgan Stanley?
I recently got a masters degree in finance from Johns Hopkins, and i'm really looking to go into an area that will be more challenging and give me good exposure - whether it be M&A or other areas in IB, or IM, private equity...
The most meritocratic front-office group at most firms is typically S&T, followed by research. If you're cool with middle office work- it's a great life if you want a family and value your heart health, I would argue that analytics and risk management might be even more meritocratic in hiring decisions than trading.
The key question here is how much your manager likes you. If your manager likes you, your temp status is actually a bit of an asset- it costs your manager less to see you going into a different part of the firm. If you've got strong reviews in your file and/or a relationship with another team, that makes you even more competitive.
I don't have direct knowledge of what goes on at Morgan Stanley, but my second and third-hand knowledge suggests things aren't any different there than they are everywhere else on the street.
In any case, congrats on landing where you have; now you have to put in the work and leverage it. First priority is to do a good job for your manager- he hired you. After several months of that, you've paid your dues and can talk to him about an internal transfer. The one advantage of being a temp is that nobody is supposed to feel hurt or annoyed if the relationship ends early, and you've got fewer dues to pay.

I have been temping since February and my contract ends in another month. I'm trying to move to a front office group, and wouldn't mind leaving MS if the opportunity presents itself. I have been doing everything I am supposed to do and really doing my best. I am sure my team is happy with the work i'm putting in.
Yes, you should definitely talk with your manager on Monday. If your contract is ending anyways and it won't need to be renewed, there is very little harm in it at this point.
