Is a CS minor worth it (Umich Ross)?

I'll be a freshman at UMich Ross, and I might be interested in consulting, fintech, and maybe investment banking. I'll be getting a BBA as my primary degree but am also considering minoring or double majoring in Computer Science or Data Science.

Do recruiters pay much attention to what your minor is for the aforementioned fields, or do they only care about what your major is? How valuable is a double major compared to a minor and is it worth the extra time/effort? And just generally, do you think a BBA from Michigan Ross is sufficient to land a variety jobs in fintech/consulting and is a CS or Data science minor worth it or will it be overlooked?

 

I just graduated from Ross with a CS minor, so I can share my experience. When I was recruiting for IB, nobody really cared about the minor. At most, they would ask why I was minoring in CS and if I was considering a career in tech. I know of a few others who managed to land fintech jobs but did not have any CS background. I don’t know anybody who went for consulting with a CS minor. If you’re truly interested in CS, I would still go for the minor because the EECS department is one of the best in the school IMO. Just don’t do it solely for the sake of a resume bump.

As a heads up, you can’t double major. You have to get a BBA and an LSA degree.

 

The minor didn't really help me that much (professionally) since I was focused on IB. If you're interested in something like quant trading it might help you get your foot in the door, but it would probably be more beneficial to go for the dual degree if that's your goal. I don't regret completing the minor though. EECS 281 is probably the best class I've ever taken, and I found the CS experience to be challenging but incredibly rewarding.
