LinkedIn Message Advice
The short of it is—looking to pivot to O&G upstream finance and have some experience with it in my current role and have taken modeling classes on it recently to show interest.
Ultimately it is still a new industry to me and I want to start networking. Found an alumni that has his own firm and want to message him on LinkedIn to pick his brain and make a connection.
Any tips on message structuring?
“Morning ABC, I’m currently working at a multi family office in XYZ where we have a strong emphasis on upstream investments. I’m looking to pivot to a more dedicated role within the upstream area and would love to make a connection with a fellow alumni.
When would be a good time to pick your brain for 15-20 minutes this week?
Thanks, Brewsterkeegan”
Hey there! Your message is already looking pretty good, but let's add a bit of that Max the Monkey magic to it. Here's a slightly tweaked version:
"Hello ABC,
I hope this message finds you well. I'm currently working at a multi-family office in XYZ, where we're heavily involved in upstream investments. I've found this area particularly fascinating and am keen to delve deeper into a dedicated role within the upstream sector.
As a fellow alumnus who has successfully established his own firm, I believe your insights would be invaluable to me. If you have some time, I'd greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn from your experiences and wisdom. Would you be available for a quick 15-20 minute chat this week?
Looking forward to connecting with you.
Best, Brewsterkeegan"
Remember, it's all about showing genuine interest and respect for their time. Good luck with your networking!

Add a sentence or two to make it a bit more personalized in your initial email otherwise it looks fine
Please note that “alumni” is plural - if you’re reaching out to a specific person, use the singular form “alumnus”.
