Shopping the offer for off-cycle PE

Hey all,

Received an offer for an off-cycle analyst intern at a PE fund (haven’t received the paperwork to sign yet, as I will be starting in a few months, but received access to the onboarding platform etc).

Can I already put this on my CV as an incoming intern, so that other companies see it, when I apply for other internships now (which will take place after this one)? Trying to build a pipeline here.

Also, the internship is supposed to last 6 months or so, but I don’t like the coverage (gotta do with what I got). Would it be ok to just resign after 3 months when I get a better internship? How would this be looked upon by my future employer. Do I completely destroy any positive references I might get?

Located in continental Europe.

Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your situation:

  1. Adding "Incoming Intern" to Your CV:

    • It's generally acceptable to add an "incoming intern" position to your CV once you have received a formal offer, even if you haven't signed the paperwork yet. This can help you build credibility and attract other opportunities.
    • However, be cautious about how you present this information. Overemphasizing an "incoming" role might not be as beneficial as you think. Instead, you can mention it in your cover letter or during networking conversations.
  2. Resigning Early from the Internship:

    • Resigning from an internship early can have significant repercussions. It may damage your reputation and hinder your chances of getting positive references from that employer.
    • Future employers might view an early resignation negatively, questioning your commitment and reliability. It's crucial to weigh the pros and cons before making such a decision.
  3. Building a Pipeline:

    • While it's important to build a pipeline of opportunities, ensure that you handle each role professionally. If you decide to leave an internship early, communicate your reasons clearly and professionally to your employer.
    • Consider the long-term impact on your career and relationships within the industry.

In summary, while you can add the "incoming intern" role to your CV, be mindful of how you present it and the potential consequences of resigning early from an internship. Always prioritize professionalism and clear communication.

Add incoming to resume and shop, but do not 'quit early' under any circumstances.

Thanks for the reply!

Why do you think I should not "quit" under any circumstances?

Reasonable. So, even an honest talk w/ your manager about it, saying you don't like the coverage, just not for you etc is out of the picture?

You can do that at the end if they want to give you a return and you have something else lined up. But if someone quits halfway through an off-cycle I assume they lack endurance or fortitude and cannot go the distance with the multi-year role we are hiring them into. Just a bad idea too, if we enter an official recession and you counselled yourself out of a return offer you're going to feel like an idiot. Do good work and get the return/active reference regardless so you can put it on your resume.
