When to announce internship LinkedIn

I recently accepted a summer internship and I do not know when I should announce it on my linkedin. I know there are drug tests and background checks before it is completely official but I should have no problem passing them. Do I announce now or do I wait until it is completely official? what do people do?

Whatever OP decides to do, just be thankful he's not this douchebag.

Please don't be one of those people who writes a 1-2 paragraphs to announce your new internship, and thanking everyone that's ever helped you like an AA speech, alongside a photo of you in a suit in the lobby in the building.

Anyone who is interested in your summer plans at XYZ will probably ask you anyways. Just update your LKND on Day 1 and act like it's no big deal.

And please rid yourself of this urge to announce all your accomplishments. Focus on actually accomplishing, and others will announce it on your behalf

Agree 100%. Do what you want, but this is usually the mindset of the people who make it the furthest and achieve the most. The only time I share something on linkedin that is self-promoting is if someone has taken the time to interview me, write an article about me and I want to thank them. Or I will share something related to a volunteer cause I care about / new technology being explored at my firm.

Humble brag of the year? :)

Some of the realist advice on this site

The amount of times this happens in the UK is disgusting and a pisstake. Going to a target uni, all i see is "thanks to XX bank HR for hosting a wonderful spring week ( a bullshit 2 day programme) I learned so much on the programme (you had a basic insight into a bank that a simple day's research on the internet could do) and loved meeting like minded individuals (perhaps the only good thing - scout the competition) " Just update the title to the position and thats it. That and then commenting saying well done on other spring week profiles. does my head in

This is golden advice. Linkedin is so fucking cringy. And whats with the description you often see on the profile- "I am extremely intelligent, brilliant....." Seriously, just stop. Those adjectives should be be mentioned in your recommendations by other people. And people should stop focussing on getting 500 connections and rather aim to get 500 recomendations, that is much harder. Even when I see 15 recommendations, I am impressed.

Also, a little off topic- one thing I have learnt in the past year about Linkedin as I was reaching out to a lot of people on there is that very few care about Linkedin in my experience once you are past the "rat race"- Once you have atleast 10 years of work experience and out of college for a decade or longer, there is just no need to have a dick measuring contest. Us, young professionals are obsessed with linkedin, will visit the site daily, but a lot of people just dont care, they dont have push notifications on their phone, the email associated with their linkedin account will be an email they dont really use, so if you send them a message, they will not see a notification for a very long time unless they visit the site. I for one cannot wait to get to that stage where I just dont want to be this obsessed with "prestige". There is so much more to life than the number of connections one has on linkedin.

I'm going to give a contrarian view on this since everyone else is giving the same answer. As an intern, no there's not really a need to announce an upcoming position you're taking until day 1. That said, I don't view putting it on LinkedIn to be as terrible of a move as everyone on here says it is.

As you advance in your career path, however, there may be merit to putting that kind of status on for networking purposes but you really have to ask yourself what the purpose is. Is it to hope your peers will think "wow I want to be him/her"? If so, no don't do that. If it's to alert your wider network about a career change and to promote the idea of others to reach out to you to collaborate and help prepare yourself for the new gig, I can see merit in that. At the end of the day, what's really important is asking yourself the inherent reason you want that out in the open.

All this said, I'm also the kind of person who will see "incoming GS intern" and react "wow good for them! That's fucking tough to get"

That's tacky as hell

Send a few emails to some connections you want to follow up with, use this as a networking tactic

Let others sing your praises, but if you absolutely must update your LinkedIn I would do so on Day 1 or thereafter. All the best and congrats, OP!

I've never heard this before, it sounds creepy. Like labor camp stuff that they put on the walls.

Creepy??? Labor camps??? No, not at all. I completely agree with the OP on this one. It's a very traditional, gentlemanly view to take that a man works hard and makes it all look easy. A "never let them see you sweat" attitude is very elegant, stoic and can get you very, very far in life.

As an incoming intern myself, I have found it useful to have "Incoming Intern at XYZ" on LinkedIn for two reasons:

  1. As a non-target student brand recognition does help bolster one' s profile.
  2. When cold messaging people within the same organization, having their company's name in your header has greatly increased response rate.

Either way, if you don't plan on utilizing it then who cares, its justs a LinkedIn profile.

They might not say it out loud, but people will likely think you’re an insufferable try-hard if you put “Incoming Pleb at ABC” on your LinkedIn. Too much cringe. Way too much cringe.

you don't need to update it at all, but if you must, wait a few weeks. and if you do decide to do it early, please do not - repeat, DO NOT put "Incoming Summer Analyst at ...." Might as well delete the entire profile if you're going to do that.

If you are at a non-target in a major city and use your linked in to aggressively network with senior professionals (especially in a specific industry ie, tech O&G, etc.) then ignore this advice.

Wow seeing all the people urging you not to be proud of your accomplishments amazes me. All the people saying they hate seeing "Incoming XXX at XXX" on LinkedIn. Well then GET OFF LINKEDIN. It is a platform promoting you and your achievements to the world, so I do not care what you want to see or if you think it is conceited. Never let anyone make you feel insecure about how accomplished you are. Be proud of yourself, tell the world. Am I an immoral monster because I like others validating my successes and knowing about it? No, because it is natural and I am how I was made. I will wear my achievements proudly, and if you feel uncomfortable seeing it then you are more insecure with how little you have accomplished by comparison. Tell the world whatever you want and don't let these "holier than thou" people make you feel bad
