Stand or Sit during interview
Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster.
Had an IB SA superday in person (for reference, this was at a bank in Texas) and the SD was in person.
Due to a disability I am extremely short (~4ft) and when I sat on the chair, my eye level was at the edge of the table, so I decided to stand instead (my thought process was that although it’d be awkward standing, the awkwardness would go away in a minute versus me sitting and not being able to see them that well).
I spoke to a friend about this and he said I should have kept sitting and asked them if they’d be fine with me standing.
What do you guys think is proper etiquette in this situation?
Based on the WSO Dataset, navigating interviews with a personal or physical challenge requires a blend of etiquette, comfort, and clear communication. In your situation, standing due to your height and the limitations of the chair and table setup was a practical decision. However, it's also important to consider the norms and expectations within a professional setting, especially in banking where traditional norms often prevail.
Here's a structured approach for future reference:
Pre-Interview Communication: If possible, communicate any special accommodations you might need due to your disability before the interview. This allows the interviewers to prepare and ensures you're comfortable during the process.
Immediate Communication: At the start of the interview, it would be advisable to briefly explain your situation and ask if it's acceptable for you to stand, if you find that sitting is not feasible. This shows respect for the interviewers' expectations and also addresses any potential awkwardness upfront.
Seek Alternatives: If standing for long periods is not comfortable, you could inquire if there's an alternative seating arrangement that could accommodate your needs better. This could include a higher chair or adjusting the table setup if possible.
Focus on Comfort and Engagement: Ultimately, your comfort is crucial for you to perform your best during the interview. If standing allows you to engage more effectively with the interviewers, it's a reasonable choice. Ensuring you maintain eye contact, good posture, and active engagement will help mitigate any initial awkwardness.
Remember, most organizations aim to be inclusive and accommodating. Clear communication about your needs can lead to a more comfortable and productive interview experience for both parties.

I think its a perfect excuse to crack a joke before the interview gets started
Haha that's a good idea! I'll think of some jokes
It would be very messed up if an interviewer docked you for whichever choice you make in that situation
Yea man hopefully don't get docked for that reason — I'd be lying if I said I'm not worried about that
