Summer Internship - Masters in Finance

Hi everyone,

I have recently been admitted to a target uni in the UK for a Masters in Finance (ex: LBS/LSE/Imperial). I graduated last August (2023) with a Computer Science degree from a semi-target (ex: Durham/Warwick). I missed the summer cycle for this year since I got admitted to the master late so I managed to defer the master's program to start in September 2025. Till then I will be working as a software engineer to finance the masters.

I just wanted to ask if I am eligible to apply for summer internships in the summer of 2025 before my master's and if I don't manage to secure one will I be able to apply for a summer internship after my master's in the summer of 2026?

Thanks!

Hey there!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, navigating the internship application process as a Masters in Finance student, especially with your background and plans, is quite a strategic endeavor. Here's how you can approach your situation:

  1. Eligibility for Summer 2025 Internships: Yes, you are eligible to apply for summer internships in 2025 before starting your Masters in Finance. Firms often look for candidates who are currently in school or about to start, as it fits their recruitment cycle for penultimate year students. Your unique background in Computer Science coupled with your upcoming finance studies makes you an intriguing candidate, especially for roles at the intersection of technology and finance.

  2. Applying for Summer 2026 Internships: Should you not secure an internship in the summer of 2025, you will still be eligible to apply for internships in the summer of 2026, after you've commenced your Masters program. In fact, being in a Masters program may enhance your profile, as you'll have more relevant knowledge and possibly some finance-related coursework or projects to discuss during your interviews.

  3. Strategies for Success:

    • Networking: Start reaching out to alumni from both your undergraduate and future Masters program, especially those working in your target firms or industries. Networking can significantly increase your chances of landing an interview.
    • Leverage Your Background: Your tech background is a strong asset. Highlight your technical skills and how they can be applied in finance, particularly in areas like fintech, quantitative analysis, or risk management.
    • Prepare Early: Given the competitive nature of finance internships, start preparing your applications well in advance. Tailor your CV and cover letter to each application, focusing on your unique blend of tech and upcoming finance education.
    • Consider Off-Cycle Internships: If the summer cycles don't work out, look into off-cycle internships that may occur during the academic year. These can also provide valuable experience and networking opportunities.

Remember, persistence and preparation are key. Your journey from a Computer Science background to finance, supported by work experience as a software engineer, presents a compelling narrative that, if communicated effectively, can set you apart from other candidates.

Best of luck with your applications and your upcoming studies!
