WSO

Hello first off I didn't not know where to post this so I chose to submit it on the Wall Street Mentors section. I apologize if this is the wrong section. Well I'm not completely sure if anyone is willing to help but I am actually only a high schooler still and will be finally attending XX University in the fall and will be studying finance. Now i know that XXUis not a premier business school but thats where I'm going. The reason for this post is that I am realizing that I need to start to get ahead of this competitive field so that is why I'm posting this. The only thing I want to do is work on Wall Street , i want to be a business man/sales man. A coach on my sports team works on Wall Street and as told me i should go into business and that I am a salesman. Now obviously i feel pretty ridiculous writing this on a website but the only reason I'm doing is so that anyone that wants to spare me some time just to give me advice and just anything they want to say. I realized it that I'm not to young to do anything I need to start maturing and just get ahead and ask questions. So any advice would be very welcomed. Thank you

No sorry I didn't mean to sound like i just wanted anyones sympathy or good lucks even though i do appreciate them and thank you. But what I was hoping for was anything, any advise i mean i obviously know that millions of people want to get on wall street and many people have connections and I understand that this may seem like a pipe dream or just another kid who saw a movie wall street but no I am far from that. I posted just because I'm hungry for knowledge or any advice, things to read or stories of any other people who were in the same situation as me maybe 5 or 10 years ago or maybe more. Anything is appreciated.

Not to be a dick but to have a good shot at a front office position from FSU you need to do the following:

  1. Improve your writing skills

  2. Get an extremely high GPA (3.7+)

  3. Know all the technicals and behavioral questions down cold

  4. Start networking now (luckily you found this community so you can start by reading through the FAQ section to try and educate yourself on the different types of "Wall Street careers" out there.

  5. Take leadership positions on campus - preferably in clubs / groups related to finance (or start your own club)

  6. Oh yeah, don't forget to enjoy college :-)

Good luck man.

I am going to piggyback off of what Patrick said here. First off, I am a huge FSU fan, so congrats on picking a school that won't make you feel as if you wasted 4 of your better years. You absolutely need to have the highest GPA possible. I will also second that you need to perfect your English writing (and speaking if necessary).

In addition to the leadership positions Patrick mentioned, look for some potential internships, during the school year, that will either be relevant or set you apart. Tally is the state capital, so you should have access to politicians and government offices so, given that you have the time and can maintain a high GPA, look into potential internship opportunities there.

Lastly, enjoy yourself. FSU is a phenomenal party school with the classiest girls around, so have fun but don't get too caught up in all the craziness. Keep your eye on the prize and do your best to balance the college fun with the responsibility necessary to obtain a coveted position on WS. Also, spend some time everyday looking through the post here on WSO. It's nearly certain that any question you want to ask has been covered and will likely be covered again. So stick around and read. Good luck.

Regards

Start thinking about what specifically you want to do. Saying that you want to "work on Wall Street" doesn't mean anything because there are a lot of different career paths within finance. Read the different forums on here to get an idea of what investment banking, trading, asset management, etc actually entail.

Keep in mind, too, that you are only a senior in high school. How about you enjoy your last semester of high school first. Sure your writing skills need to improve, but you have some time to work on them. Definitely enjoy college when you get there and try your best to get great grades because you will need them. Ultimately, you are starting early enough that if you do your research and work hard you may have a shot, but don't get too caught up in all this stuff yet because you should be enjoying life right now.

Thank you all and yes I apologize also for the spelling and grammar I will check my post before I send from here on out. Also thank you for being honest and straight with me, I don't take any comment as an insult or take it as being a dick. I probably won't post too much on WSO but I'll be an active reader and also any suggestions for reading and other material noted. Also I am not sure exactly what I want to do on Wall Street but I am very aware of the range of jobs there are. And for the FSU fan thank you, I have been wanting to go to FSU my whole life mostly cause of football team and well also the classy ladies.

I share this now and then...email Ministers of Finance in English Speaking countries. So during winter break, after finals, send about 40+ emails to various ministers (or any government minister for that matter) and tell them you will do quantitative work/talk strategy with them. If you are as good of a salesmen as you say you are, one or two will bite. They will then send you a zipped file, and tada ... winter under the Florida sun just got a lot more interesting. I've snagged one Minister in my lifetime, you can to.
