Yale or LSE (for masters)

Hi guys,

I have got an offer for master courses from the following unis (both one yr):

  1. London School of Economics (LSE) - management and regulation of risk (in finance department)
  2. Yale - International and Development Economics

I am currently a third yr undergrad in London and I will be interning in an investment bank this summer also. I see myself in IB, but i dont particularly have a preference between working in NY or London. So basically, just wanted your advice on which one would be a better from a job perspective, or if people felt that neither would really add much value.

thanks

dacasaleBoth universities are good (I would choose Yale), but I can't see how those actual masters will help you in IB. I would focus on getting a conversion this summer and then doing some travelling or volunteer work experience. Unless you have a massive scholarship, it will be cheaper as well.

I think MSF or MFE would help in IB. I'd go for Yale too lol LSE is relatively easier to get in.

Signs of Recession: Banker: “Where’s me Bonus?” Yuppie: “Whadya mean I have to actually work?” Fox Rock Mum: “Lidl’s the place to be seen in now!” Cowen: “It’s not my fault that me and my party are complete f**k-ups - it’s the recession silly!”

9 out of the last 10 years, london bankers have made more than US bankers - admitedly, someitmes, like this year its by a whisker ($2,500) - but when it was $2 to the £1 we were making considerably more (upwards of 30%).

I think working in NYC is overrated - longer hours, less money, although I think as a city, it's the best in the world and I imagine that's a lot of the appeal.

LSE and Yale are both fantastic - but Yale won't carry the same punch as LSE if your interviewing in London.

Also, development economics isn't really as relevant to banking.

You are forgetting two key elements...taxes and cost of living. No matter what you say, london is disgustingly expensive. New york is expensive by american standards, but in comparison to most european cities & japan it isn't. Take a look at any ranking of world's most expensive cities if you need further backing.

If you go to the LSE you can apply for jobs in both the US and the UK (assuming you're American). Plus it's a more relevant program.

Yale. It's Ivy League and is known the world over.

I went to Yale in Economics at the Ph.D. coursework level when the Nobel Laureates were there, met Ed Meese and Paul Volker also -- the Yale affiliation helped open doors on Wall Street, but in the international venue, LSE has more prestige.
