Personally would even go w 32gb (I know it might be costly in laptop config) but if budget permits it will substantially smooth out the 50+ chrome web plus office app

I don't know what the price difference is between 16 and 32 but since on a budget you're right to consider diminishing returns with the VDI... your fast computer will be limited by your VDI at some point. I might go with 16gb i7 vs 32gb i5 if you're doing heavy excel

You're most likely to be kneecapped by RAM.  I've got a decade old mid/high end custom build (i5 4670k) for when i don't have the work laptop.  Upgrading to 32gb of RAM, even old DDR3 makes it very sufficient.  Beyond that, get a decent SSD to hold the programs, videos and other media can go on an old HDD.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

But I won't be running Excel files on my own personal computer, right? Massive compliance issue, not allowed to - I only need a reasonable machine that can run the virtual desktop... 16GB RAM should be ok?
