A Perry nomination will be a disaster for the GOP
So Rick Perry of Texas announced his presidential bid today in South Carolina. The fact that he could win the GOP nomination sends chills down my spine. The guy is a dumber version of George W. Bush, without the ivy league pedigree and is MUCH crazier on social and religious issues. He mixes the worst aspects of America: radical Christianity with vulgar Texas populism bordering on talks of secession.
His supporters say that Perry would be a strong candidate because one-third of private sector jobs created in the U.S. since the economic crash have come from Texas. Although that's technically correct, giving Perry credit for that boom is rather dubious. First, the governorship of Texas is VERY weak, with little power to enact substantive changes. In this regard, it is totally different from the governorship of New Jersey, which provides tremendous executive power to the governor, something that has been used quite effectively by Chris Christie. Second, the Texas economic boom can almost be entirely attributed to the oil boom and increased defense spending since the Iraq War. These are factors that are totally beyond Perry's control.
Politically speaking, the GOP has a very good shot at beating Obama if they nominate a smart accomplished conservative like Huntsman or Romney, men who have serious private sector and executive experience (in the case of Huntsman, foreign policy credentials and a very impressive knowledge of China). Either of these men can make a strong case against Obama's destructive economic policies and his general lack of leadership. Perry, however, is an empty suit, who will get portrayed by Obama as a radical conservative who will take America back to the days of George W. Bush. Perry will be unable to win over independent moderate voters, especially college-educated white professionals in the suburbs. And young people and minorities will not vote for a radical Texas hillbilly. I fear that if the GOP goes with their feelings rather than their brains and nominate Perry, Obama will win a resounding victory and accelerate our nation's decline.
Relax, bro. The GOP has no shot in 2012.
You might as well get used to the idea of four more years of Obama.
(full discolosure: I can't stand Obama)
I simply cannot beleive, with two years of preparation, an opponent with the highest unemployment rates since the great depression, no plan, no policies, double speak every time he opens his mouth, and they can't come up with one, ONE viable candidate.
Even if he gets re-elected he'll be lame duck with none of the houses alla "W's" second term. Even so what this guy has been able to do through executive order and czars is nothing short of incredible. Congress has basically been castrated in 3 years.
You are talking about Bush here, right?
After watching Perry's speech today, I was reminded of Rudy Guiliani. Both of these men are the definition of Demagogue. While Guiliani ran his campaign on appealing to the emotions and ineptitude of the american population, Perry does the same. Things that Perry said in his speech evoked this comparison, such as: 1. the moment of silence at the beginning 2. Talking about his one and only wife that he met when he was 8 3. Of course he's got to bring up the troops, especially since he was in S.C. 4. Texas infamous 900k job creation. 5. Only talking about the prosperity of our great nation
It's very strategic on Perry's part to only attempt to appeal to the populace emotions, its what won Obama this presidency.
We need to get these politicians, who only bring political experience to the table, to appeal to sound logic and ration. We need a leader who will tell the american people that things are not going well at all, and will only get worse if we stay on the trajectory we are currently on. We need to implement austerity and self control, thus placing an emphasis on productivity and increased savings to stimulate growth in this country, not government programs, continued borrowing, and this "kicking the can down the road" mentality.
Disclaimer: I'm from TX
I'm not sure which country you're talking about, but it sure isn't the U.S. There's no way American voters are going to vote for bitter medicine.
american politics are the biggest joke on the world stage. This countries stupidity is appalling. As soon as I can make enough money, im the fuck outta here....
I agree we are fucked if Perry wins the nomination. Moderates / independents will just stay home or vote for Obama. On the other hand, Romney may not be considered by many on the far right to be a conservative, but if he wins the nomination who else are they going to vote for? Their hate for Obama will not keep them home on voting day!
Worst case scenario Obama wins, but Chris Christie runs in 2016.
I hate to be the one to say it, but there's also no way America votes for a guy in magic underwear. Regardless of his qualifications, Romney has no shot. American voters would sooner elect Ron Paul (and by doing so fuck up and get something right for once).
rofl@ "smart accomplished conservative like Romney"
you mean the guy who essentially created Obamacare?!
there's one guy that can beat Obama and get America back on track within a four year term...
that man, WILL NEVER GET A GOP NOMINATION, let alone be elected prez...
like Eddie told ya, warm your ass up for four more years
Who might that be?
Ron Paul wants us back on the gold standard. Chris Christie doesn't appear to be running and even if he did, odds are he'd have a heart attack and die efore ever reaching the office.
It's Ron Paul. Out of the many points he has you pick out the return to the gold standard...
Not having a tangible commodity to back up the exchange of wealth is devastating to economies and is the principle and sole reason we are in the mess we are in, as consumers and as a nation.
Regarding the Romneycare thing, that was a concern of mine, but did you see the debate last week? I thought he explained that well.
Which candidate were you talking about who could win?
Debating between Obama and Romney is like those guys that swear there's a diff between Bud and Bud Light...or perhaps the Pepsi Challenge is a better analogy. Two sides of the same big ass government coin, no matter how well (and they are both masters at it) they rationalize things out after the fact.
Ron Paul's the guy I was alluding to (though firmly tongue in cheek). He scares RINOs more than he does the Left and has no shot at a GOP nod. Reiterating; if he were a good bit younger with another 20 years or so to work with and spread his message, he'd have a shot. The fact that many people still don't know who he is or comically reference his gold standard comments like someone in this thread, shows just how far we are away from seeing an actual Conservative making decisions in the U.S.
Presidential elections have become sort of a bizzaro Miss America pageant, instead of wanting to fuck all of the contestants, you are guaranteed that one of them will end up fucking you.
Every time someone wants to bash Christie it is "he is a fatsoo omgee"... you know he is a good choice when that is all they can come up with.
Bachmann wins the straw poll. Paul very close second.

Isn't she the one who said that the US shouldn't trade on international markets?
I vaguely remember her saying that on newsnight
"He mixes the worst aspects of America: radical Christianity with vulgar Texas populism bordering on talks of secession."
Lol u mad?
Back to topic, it's probably going to be Romney who is going to win
I hafta say I'm a little proud that you think "vulgar Texas populism bordering on talks of secession" is one of the worst aspects of America. So now you know my opinion and where I'm from, if it isn't obvious from my username.
The recent job growth in Texas cannot be written off as due to an "oil boom" or increased military spending. Oil has been swinging back and forth erratically so while the price trend may be upwards it is nowhere near stable enough to lead to a boom in hiring. A large part of the increases in military spending is a result of rising commodities prices - guns, tanks, bullets, bombs, planes, all made from metals.
While Perry is pretty far out there on social and religious issues, he has a proven track record of economic growth, which is what we need more than anything else right now. He'll be so busy fixing the economy (even though that's not the president's real job) that he won't be able to enact any drastic social changes.
Many "independent moderate voters," especially young college ones, voted for the first time to help elect Obama. I am a college student and I can say that the general sentiment at my university is such a serious disenchantment with politics that many such voters will probably stay at home after learning their lesson.
I'm sure that was a rhetorical question, I don't see much difference in the last guy and the one we have now.
