Accountant Selection

Was wondering how many of y’all do your own taxes vs pay an accountant to do yours? If you use an accountant, how did you go about finding and selecting them? What are the best questions to screen with etc.

I currently use an accountant due to my odd income structure (and the fact that I don’t know jack shit about tax accounting), and will need to find a new one or someone who can work alongside my current accountant. Ideally in the long term I would like to let go of my current one as I haven’t been satisfied with his performance lately. Any help or advice is appreciated!

Can’t really help as I don’t have knowledge of your specific situation, but I would go about interviewing accountants and see how many current clients exist with a similar situation to yourself. I signed an agreement for work years ago and it hit me that I no longer would be able to do my own taxes. I then began to interview accountants and looked for those who had K1 clients in the same industry/income bracket as myself. My thought was if others are using him, he’d have insight as to what my peers were doing to save money, defer taxes, and minimize inconveniences.

The person I found was an alum of Big 4 who hung up his own shingle. I didn’t want to be at a big firm as I figured there would be safeguards/limitations in place regarding what they could do for someone. My guy helps with whatever I need, even my dumb questions such as “Do I need this big vehicle receipt for any tax purposes given how large the sales tax is!?”

I haven’t used him for this purpose yet, but I figure at some point he’d be the man for local referrals should I guidance finding a professional such as a lawyer, financial advisor, real estate person, whatever.
