Advice Needed

Hey sorry to bother you guys but i just had a quick question. I was accepted to the regular college at Rose Hill intending to study economics and computer science. Would it be better to transfer to Gabelli and abandon computer science? Or will i have essentially the same recruiting opportunities out of the regular college?

Transfer to Gabelli, no question. The deans in Fordham College are entirely useless, I had to switch a class once and they gave me an entire lecture about the "seriousness" of switching courses (it's not a big deal), and they made me come in at 8:30 just because they wanted me to be "professional," their words, not mine. When I switched to Gabelli, the deans were exceptionally nice and useful, they even recommended good professors and helped me register for classes. It's a no brainer in that regard. Beyond that, in the College, you have to take so much more useless core classes, like two mandatory science courses, at least one or two language courses (depends on if you pass out of the intro courses). You might like that stuff, but I sure didn't. I'm majoring in finance, minoring in economics, and I can't stress how much better it is to be in Gabelli than Fordham College. It's less work overall, much better teachers, and you get to learn about relevant material, rather than waste time getting a rudimentary education in astronomy like many of my friends at Fordham College are doing. Hope this helps, PM me if you have any questions.

Transfer to Gabelli. I think the core classes for frosh is still the same in both schools for the first year making it easy to transfer. I could be wrong as I finished a few years ago when it was still CBA. Make sure you take relevant courses to what you want to get into. Network with alums and do internships. There's no excuse not to have internship experience being in nyc.

To answer your actual question, yes you should have the same recruiting opportunities from regular college at Fordham. But just because you will have the same opportunities doesn't mean it won't be harder to know about them. In Gabelli, you will be able to take more business classes, which will increase your business knowledge for recruiting, but if you'd like to have a mix of majors then this might not be a priority for you. Gabelli students get exposed to Deans who have backgrounds in business and work to help you come recruiting season. However, you can reach out to them even if you are not a Gabelli student. You will miss out on Gabelli emails, but you can ask your Gabelli friends to forward them to you. Overall, if you care more about a career in IB, S&T then switch to Gabelli. If you are into research or computer science you can stay in the regular collage, but be more proactive in making sure you hear of all the opportunities.

Do what you want not what you can!

i disagree bossman. maybe ocr is the same (doubtful- lots of jobs require a acct, fin, etc major) but the deans, finance job liaison or whatever shes called, other programs are all geared at gabelli. i know I got a bunch of interviews I didnt apply for bc deans/faculty submitted my resume, something I doubt happens with RH kids.

Transfer to Gabelli, minor in CS or Econ (or both), if you do a concentration (not my path) you can do both with room to spare.

Though if youre here as an incoming freshman, you should have no trouble doing whatever you want.

Yah sorry bossman that's really not true. It is significantly harder to get into the industry as a computer-science major. Economics is much more common for sales and trading, as most traders do prefer them. HOwever, you will not have the same opportunities because you will miss out on special opportunities like business advising (although pretty useless), presentations, and a lack of overall knowledge of the field. If you want to work in finance, then you are already behind before you even began. It's pretty easy to switch when you get here, but it is worth it. You don't want to go into interviews literally knowing nothing and just being "very interested in the subject" - you can get away with that at a top target school - but this definitely is not one of those.

Awesome thanks a ton guys. And yeah the only reason I was planning on doing a double with computer science was I thought it could be useful for trading positions down the road but now I am no so sure and regardless I hadn't even considered a minor. (What's the saying about the best answer is usually the simplest).

Does anyone have any insight into how difficult it actually is to transfer? I am going in with a bunch of scholarships so I assume they would be pretty accommodating?

Thanks again for all the advice

Just go to your dean and go meet with a business dean. If you want to do trading you should do both business and economics. Traders in general do prefer economics students because it's more that kind of thinking. You could do both or minor in econ
