Andy Reid Finally Out in Philly

Happy New Year WSO! Holy smoke, this Black Monday was a scorcher. Seven head coaches and five general managers in the NFL got their walking papers yesterday, and some were a long time coming. After my miserable showing in the WSO Fantasy Football League this season, I was happy to see a couple of these clowns get the boot.

No one deserved to get the ax more than Philadelphia's Andy Reid, and I'm sure there was a collective sigh of relief in the City of Brotherly Love when that ax finally fell. I have a lot of buddies in Philly (and even more who are Eagles fans) who are just sick to their stomachs over the new and exciting ways the Eagles found to lose under Andy.

While Reid's firing makes total sense, can somebody explain the Jets' decision to me? GM Mike Tannenbaum is out, but Rex Ryan gets to keep his job? I don't get that one at all. The whole Sanchez/Tebow/McElroy disaster should have been enough to show Ryan the door. He's clearly lost control of that team.

On the plus side (for me anyway) Sean Payton signed a five-year extension to stay on with the Saints, so maybe we can put this stolen season behind us. I swear the NFL should have to compensate the Saints for lost revenue due to Goodell's incompetence. But then every team would be owed money after the replacement ref debacle.

Overall, it was a pretty disappointing season (with a few high points like Andrew Luck and RGIII and Peyton Manning's remarkable comeback). But hey, it's football, so it's still better than any other sport on the planet. And you have to love the meritocracy of it all. Win or die. Just ask Andy.

I like the 49ers to win it all this year. What do you guys think?

I'm a Giants fan, but I think Rex is a good coach. The Jets mess really lies at the feet of Tanenbaum. The contract that he gave Sanchez is totally awful and makes him almost impossible to trade without the team eating basically all of his guaranteed salary (like $8 million in 2013.) The team was also decimated by injuries this year. Not having Revis was game changing. That said, the defense actually held up alright which is a testament to Ryan as a coach.

Per the Tebow thing, Ryan never wanted him. Tebow was more or less brought in to help sell PSLs to wealthy people. Apparently, Woody Johnson (the team owner) was using Tebow as a celebrity of sorts to sell them. Ridiculous.

Falcon - Russell Wilson is honestly amazing. Like a new age Fran Tarkenton. The way he keeps plays alive is simply unbelievable. He doesn't always have huge games, but he is capable of big things. I'd be very worried about playing the Seahawks if I were the Skins.

Lastly, I am so beyond belief hungover right now. Holy shit.

While I agree that Reid's time in Philly was up, keep in mind that even though they never won a SB, the Eagles were one of the NFL's elite franchises from '99-'09 (this is coming from a Cowboys fan). Out of all the head coaches that were fired on Monday, he'll be the only one that would easily slide into any open head coaching positions. Norv Turner? Not a head coach, but a damn good OC (I wouldn't mind having him back in Dallas). Lovie Smith? Not a head coach, but a damn good DC (maybe the Eagles can pick him up). Same with Romeo Crennel...a good DC, but not a head coach. Andy Reid is like a less intimidating Bill Parcells.

I think Rex is a good defense coordinator and the most of the players really like him, so the Jets should keep him. Statistically speaking, the Jets had the 2nd best pass-D despite missing the best corner in the game, so props to him for managing to do that. He needs to hire a smart OC and find a QB that can actually (drum-roll) pass. Anyone know if Chad Pennington is still available? :) It was a bad season for the Jets, but he doesn't deserve the boot...yet. If he screws up again, I guarantee you that he'll be out next year.

lovie smith won 10 games. There is no reason to get rid of him. Jay Cutler will still be a little bitch next year.

Andy Reid will get pretty much any job he wants next season. His Eagles were always relevant, and that is about all you can expect of an NFL coach.

Lovie started out the year 7-1 and missed the playoffs. In 2011, they started 7-3 and finished the season 8-8. Mad props to him for managing to ride a dominant defense and Rex Grossman to a Super Bowl, but you can't expect to collapse like that two years in a row and expect to keep your job. But you're right, Cutler's a bitch. Red flags should've gone up after he demanded that trade while he was with Denver.

Also, Russell Wilson's my boy. Representing all of us 5'11 guys. Wilson deserves the ROY more than Luck, but with RGIII doing what he did, the old boy from Baylor should be a unanimous pick for ROY.

Eddie, I don't see how it's overall a disappointing season for the NFL. Besides Peyton, you have the remarkable season of Adrian Peterson (how much more heart can a guy have) who single-handedly compensates for the vast deficiencies the Vikings have at QB. You also have Calvin Johnson's remarkable season (sure, illegal contact/DPI/roughing the passer penalties make the league pass-happy). It's also the debut season of the next generation of QB's (Wilson/RG3/Luck) that will make the Eli/Ben/Rivers class look unaccomplished 10 years from now. It's also the season where Aldon Smith/JJ Watt/Von Miller validated their draft position with amazing seasons. Yes, refs were a debacle and Goodell is incompetent and retarded, but I think it has been a season filled with great stories.

I agree. My favorite play of the year was the Mark Sanchez 'butt fumble'. I have never seen a single play epitomize both a player's and a team's season as well as that one.

The 'butt fumble' was truly unreal. So sad. Not to be forgotten, the Krumble (Kick Return, Fumble Return for a Touch Down) that happened to the Jets in the same game. Simply brutal.

Surprised nobody's talking about the Whisenhunt firing. They could have been coached by Walsh and Landry and still would have missed the playoffs, their QB and oline play was absolutely dreadful. It's not a good year for QBs draft wise (can't believe Geno might be the top pick) but Arizona could turn into the next SF if they get someone that isn't Lindley/Skelton in place.

Chiefs are a QB away too. They had more pro bowlers than Atlanta.

As an Eagles fan, I really liked Andy, (despite forgetting that you can at times run the ball), but everyone knew that his time was up. He'll be a great coach somewhere else and wouldn't be surprised if he won a Super Bowl with whatever lucky team gets him. but the eagles are still a super mess.

Nursing a small headache this morning, but nothing to complain about. Sucks about the Giants, but hey--maybe not having any New York football in the playoffs will be a relief.

Gonna have to agree with notaspammer here, Whisenhunt didn't have a prayer. When the Rams exposed them for what they really were it was over. I watched that game, and at the time I said I'd be shocked if they won another game after starting 4-0. Their QBs are so piss poor they kept LARRY FITZGERALD from having a very productive year.

If you can't kill them with kindness, just kill them.

Hate that Rex Ryan is still allowed to be coach of a team that fired its GM. I don't care how deep he took his team two seasons ago or how many injuries his team had--that's football. If past successes were relevant then Andy Reid would still have a job (I'm assuming he'll sign with Zona by Friday), and he is the foremost propagator of the theatrics and false claiming his team/circus is known for. "We will be better than the Giants for the next ten seasons".....whatever you say chief. His multiple season long refusal to acknowledge that Mark Sanchez shouldn't be a starter in the National Football League is equally as frustrating. Whether it's fair or not, coaches who fail to produce winning seasons and playoff appearances don't last. Not sure why Rex is an exception to that rule.

I like Denver and SF in the superbowl, with Denver taking it 24-17. Both defenses are top notch, which I think will be the ultimate decider, but SF's qb game simply can't hang with Peyton and company. Not to mention the Broncos look better every time they play, whereas the 9ers are losing steam.

Seahawks look good, I'd be nervous if I were a 'skins fan right about now.

during andy reid's tenure, the eagles made the playoffs 9 out of 14 seasons, and were only under .500 three times. this guy is gonna be off the market fast.. in fact i heard that he'll be the the head coach at Arizona by the end of the week.
