Are sugar mamas really a thing?

Heard the term "sugar mama" thrown around every now and then, but I've never actually known anyone even tangentially (either the younger guy with the 45+ year old rich MILF) that actually had a "sugar mama" relationship. Have you guys ever known someone who has? Is this even relatively common?

My cousin is slightly younger than me (27) and has a gf who is 58. She is divorced and an entrepreneur, with a line of her own products that are manufactured and sold. His family initially had a problem with it, especially his parents, but overall they have been together for a few years now and seem happy.

I don't think anybody has approached them about the age gap or their genders.

edit:
I should have mentioned the "sugar" aspect a little bit more:
- my cousin is attractive (clarification: His partner is also attractive)
- he stopped working after they met. started again but just some random job that doesn't require any effort or degrees.
- his partner pays for most if not all things he needs. from cars to vacation and more

That's all I know.

"Dating can be tricky for most people, but this woman seems to have it easy and pays her man to do anything she wants.

Julie, 44, is a proud cougar and sugar mama whose man is 15 years her junior and earns a cool $15,000 a month just by being her boyfriend."
