Do bankers play basketball anywhere in the city, either late night on weekdays or on the weekends? I've heard of runs at the NY athletic club but that's a bit out of my tax bracket for probably the next few years.
If not, any NYC analysts/associates up for getting some late night runs together?
Yeah there are leagues or some loose organization. Some banks or individual groups sponsor them. Basketball, softball, hockey, Lax etc...Just ask around, it varies on banks and groups. IE mine supports a basketball team but not hockey, but a director sponsors hockey in the NJ office. But there is still a league in NY at the piers.
where would we have late night runs?
I'm interested in this...particularly weeknights. If you can find a court, I'm for having a WSO pickup league, with like an 8pm or 9pm tip off.
So am I. Would love to run some pick-up games.
Sounds good here too but would need to be in the 9-10 range. Let's find a gym and call them to see if we can rent it weekly. Any suggestions?
I don't even know what I'm doing on this site (med student), but one of my favourite pasttimes has been getting drunk and going to play basketball at Columbus Park in Chinatown (Worth between Mulberry and Baxter). It's usually empty around the time I go (normally somewhere around 11pm-4am), so that wouldn't be a half bad place to host these games. I imagine it'd be more packed around 8-9pm, though. Oh, lighting may be scant as well, but it's nothing that truly hinders play.
I used to play there quite a bit. Why are you playing so late though? I doubt bankers would be playing there though. Its too crowded during the daytime usually. There are bad kids that go there to play sometimes so its not super safe.
I play late because of the reason you mention -- it's too crowded during the daytime. Also, there is no better way to end a night out with friends than a game of basketball, so I always try to end up there before I head home. I've never found safety to be an issue, but maybe you can ascribe that to my inebriation. At the same time, it's not like the court is The Cage or Rucker Park. I figured it'd be a good spot because it's close enough to the Financial District and would be convenient for anyone working there.
The Nets arena is usually empty.
I'm definitely down to ball. All State in high school played in college until i quit.
Used to be one of the only honkies when I played at the cage. Now I'm the only honky anywhere I play because I live in dc.
how about something like MMA? or even BJJ or Judo matches would be interesting between bankers.

I try to work out every day for about an hour, but I hate treadmills and the like so I play basketball instead. I find it's also great networking if you get in with the right group of guys. Anyone here play ball in NYC? Where are the best spots/times?

You guys are probably the reason why bankers don't play basketball. (That and the crazy hours.)
I will say that a gym membership in Manhattan is a good thing to have. You meet a lot of experienced people and if you're friendly, the older folks (IE the 60 year olds without any kids) start to share some of their secrets. I met the husband of a dean for a major business school and he gave me a lot of advice on b-school apps and interviews. (It probably helped that I was not applying to her school.) Incredibly nice guy; loved to talk about the European economy and the screwed up pension system in the US.
not really sure what you mean by that. I could care less about the networking, it's really about the basketball...however, if I happen to bump into people that might help my career, then double bonus. have to say that some of the best friendships i've made have come through sports.
but back to the original question, is there anywhere to play ball?
When I was in Manhattan, I saw all of these people walking around with ZogSports tshirts on. Might be worth looking into. Don't think anyone in the FO has time for organized sports. Swimming, running, and weights are nice in that you can do it whenever you have free time.
ZogSports is just the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Everyone in IB knows the only place for pick up is Rucker Park. Those guys dont fool around, you'll either come out of there with a better network of ballers like you and a pair of jordans (the blackman equivalent to a hermes tie), or a bruised ego and a pair of ripped versace shorts that you thought would hold up when jamal crossed your ass and ruined your PE/VC exit opps by showing the rest of the ballers that your defence wasn't prestigious enough. Go get em kid, get lit up!

would love to join you guys, did you find anything? I've done some research, most of the outdoor games are overcrowded, leagues like Zogsports are ok, but it is a too big commitment to show up every week for 10 weeks in a row. Found some games on trytopic and some on craigslist.
