Best doctor if you suspect you tore your meniscus
What type of doctor/specialist should I be looking for if I think I tore or injured my lateral meniscus on my knee? It's been bothering me for a couple weeks now (think I tweaked it doing squats or something) and I'm an idiot and can't figure out what sort of doctor I should be trying too get an appointment with.
Orthopedic Surgeons usually handle meniscus surgery. It is one of the most common surgeries that Orthopedic Surgeons perform.
Go to an integrated orthopedic practice - one that has surgery, PT and imaging. There should be one in your area. They’ll be able to help you and they know the order of people you should see to triage and treat.
Is it warm to the touch and swollen? Then its probably torn. I've dislocated both my knee caps and have sprained my MCL and torn my MPFL. If you sprained it or even tore it there isn't a lot they can do for you besides put you on crutches. You'll probably need to do PT to strengthen your quad.
If you're in NYC recommend going to a knee guy at HSS, best orthopedic hospital in the country
That said, an orthopedic is what you need. Find someone who specializes in knees or sports injuries
Y'all are the best! I'm not in NYC so I'll look elsewhere, but this is a fantastic starting point. Thank you!
You'll need an MRI to determine whether or not it's torn. If it's a minor tear, see what the opinion of your Ortho is, but generally speaking unless they're knife-happy, you can manage a torn meniscus with a good PT regimen by strengthening the muscles around the tear. The lateral meniscus gets a bit more blood flow than the medial meniscus, so there's a chance it can heal, but it's slim. Unless you are experiencing swelling and mobility issues (it clicks, or catches, etc), a good surgeon will encourage you to explore non-surgical options before scoping it.
That said, arthroscopic knee surgery is super simple and recovery time is minimal. They'll usually just shave off the piece that is causing issues. Repair is a lot more complicated and takes a lot longer to heal.
Bottom line: see an Orthopedist, get an MRI, and determine next steps. Would encourage you to exhaust non-surgical options (PT) before going for surgery.
Go to an orthopaedic. They’ll probably run an MRI and recommend surgery/rest/physio based on severity
I think as a general note in the future, head to any GP and they should be able to refer you to a specialist. Heck, just ask the front desk at your nearest large hospital and they’ll set you up with a consultation.
Don’t wait around at home asking kids on a finance forum haha
Hope you recover soon
