The Great Gatsby, 1984, Animal Farm, Lord of the flies and to kill a mockingbird. Hope this should help
That’s a pretty good list for an 8th grader lol
Only if you read at an 8th grade level lmao. You're going to grad school and you've never heard of critical lenses?
I really enjoy the western canon - it’s a great collection of books. All very good/influential writers and you can dig into them as much as you want.
Bret Easton Ellis' other novels are actually quite good.
Less than Zero is great and pretty chilling. I honestly think that Bret Easton Ellis might be a sociopath for real but one that writes books rather than kills people.
>Less than Zero is great and pretty chilling.
He saw the future...
Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead
I come here to say these two specifically. Theres always some dimwit libtard/socialist that hates these suggestions.
I am going to disagree. Whatever you think of the philosophy, and I am rather a fan, the writing stinks. Atlas is 1100 pages of a slog that really gets lost in the middle of the book, and the 100 page monologue towards the end is sheer torture. If I was going to pick 'beach reading' Hemingway and Fitzgerald are safe choices. I might be a little insane, but the good doctor (HST) is also entertaining as s--- too.
Read “In the Shadow of the Law,” “Don’t Go to Law School (Unless),” a 1L Torts casebook, “The Rooster Bar,” every “Third Tier Reality” post (use Wayback Machine), and every post at the blog “Outside the Law School Scam.” This list includes enough literature for you to correct your decision to go to law school. You’re better than that.
“The alchemist” easy read, good lessons, and good story. Great book to talk about to.
My 4th grade teacher used to read that out loud to the class, really want to read it again.
I didn't like it personally. I'd give it an alche-miss.
I've barely dipped my toes in, but the top Russian literature is incredible to read. Crime and Punishment and Anna Karenina were both phenomenal books. For something a bit more recent I'd recommend The Human Stain by Philip Roth.
European/Asian lit gang wya.

I read a part of "the idiot" but got bored with it.
I second this and add Dostoyevsky’s Idiot. Russia has some of the best literature I have ever read.
Edgar Allen Poe. As a ENTJ this fave me a introverted side as well and help calms me down to focus. It also gives me a edgy characteristics that FUX. Edgar Allen pairs well sith Nietszche. Really gets you thinking deeper and loose the materialistic.
Lost Illusions, Vineland, Catcher In The Rye, Bel Ami, The Black Dahlia
Animal Farm, 1984, Brave New World, The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death's End.
Since this is a finance site, Bonfire of the Vanities
What is that book actually about, I recall seeing it mentioned in either American Psycho or Liar's Poker, can't remember which one
It's about a bond trader who hits a black kid with their car and the ensuing fallout. It is so heavily mentioned because it follows the white upper class bond trader, the middle class Jewish lawyers, and the lower class Black community, and all the tensions embedded in NYC at the time (1980s).
The book is great but the movie with Tom Hanks isn't bad either in case you want to check it out.

The Count of Monte Cristo.
War and Peace. Best book I've ever read.
Tolstoy's short fiction (Norton critical edition) analysis of his works shows you his true genius.
Anna Karenina
Tolstoy is easily the best author to ever live. Nominated for 9 noble prizes. Six in literature and three peace prizes. You might as well read the best literature if you are going to read it.
Notable American author's works.
The Fountainhead
The Sun Also Rises
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Have some recommendations. Gravity's Rainbow, The Sirens of Titan, Daodejing, Tractatus Logico Philosophicus, Cicero's Republic, Beyond Good and Evil, Zarathustra, Ulysses, L'etranger, Candide, Miss Lonelyhearts, At the Mountains of Madness
dangerously high iq post
Had to diversify the thread away from assigned reading like 1984, Brave New World, F451
