Black History Month

Is anyone's company honoring Black History Month? I'm a little perplexed that my organization hasn't put forward more effort other than an email announcing it with a link to more information. In years past we'd have talks, luncheons, and the like which in my opinion were very well organized and received.

IndigoTaurus:
you know damn right that these organizations dont really care about black history month

Perhaps. I will say I was pleasantly surprised with some of the luncheon talks that were organized. Someone gave a remarkable testimonial and was even present during the MLK I have a dream speech. Many I'm sure went for the catered lunch, but I'm sure many left with a new personal outlook.

At the moment, I think a lot of the firms on the street are really more focused on damage control / not getting railed [again] after the market fell on its face in December / January. I'm sure BHM is still very important and that a lesser amount of effort this year is probably more due to different priorities and bad timing, rather than anything else.

My organization is 13 people, none of whom is African American. No holiday, short of maybe Christmas, has a big deal made about it, so no we do not honor black history month but it's not some slight against it either.

A competitor gave free copies of MLK's Letter from A Birmingham Jail to all employees and residents this year. I thought that was interesting given the content of that letter, but that's about it.

Many years ago, when I worked at a Swiss bank, their various heritage/diversity events were impressive, to say the least. One year I attended a lecture given by John Amaechi, formerly of the NBA. Another year I attended a lecture given by the one and only, Maya Angelou, which is still a highlight in my life, seeing her start her talk by singing "This little light of mine." :)

And now, at my current firm, not even a whiff of a mention of anything on the intranet page.

What I would much rather see a focus on building out hiring funnels that minimize bias, AKA a meaningful reduction in racism or training on recognizing cognitive bias. This is something everyone with a brain should be interested in because it leads to objectively better candidates and there's no reason not to do it. It doesn't cost more to implement.

It's not mutually exclusive (training vs. some black history month event). And how much time and money do you think goes to these events versus other events (say, a Christmas part). If we start doing things to appease people who are a "little bit racist" to prevent them from being a lot racist then we are going down the wrong path.

Not from the USA by any means, but when I hear Black History Month I always think of this interview with Morgan Freeman.

To me it sounds like a white guilt type of thing. Can't for the life of me imagine why black people would want a black history month.

Also, what is black history? It implicates that there is one black race, like all black people have the same roots and their history started on the slave ships.

Spot on. You can never have normal race relations if you're going to perpetually put a group on a pedestal for random periods throughout the year. Same thing goes for the LGB community and pride month - you will never be able to truly be part of the crowd if you are constantly going out of your way to stand out. It's a shame this country went in the exact opposite direction Morgan's talking about here.

Why is February Black History month? You'd think that - given the history of giving African Americans a raw deal - giving them the shortest month in the year to celebrate Black history is just another slap in the face. It's like saying: "We'll remember your contributions to our history for a month, but please, can it be the shortest month possible???"

Controversial

Companies don't give a fuck about BHM or about racism in general. They only do it to avoid being cancelled or called out by the woke mob.

Anyone who really wants to learn more about black history will do it by themselves whenever they want. I think having one day or two is OK (e.g. MLK day), but a whole month?  The same goes to the gays; one whole month? LOL

Meanwhile the rest of americans keep on with their lives not giving a shit about racism. And I'll tell you something, all the criminal activities I've suffered (stolen belongings, car break-ins, house break-in attempt...), have been perpetrated by black/brown people. If you think I'm going to celebrate their month... you better grab a seat to wait. And you're lucky I'm not in charge of hiring at my company...

Wait what the fuck...

First of all, that's insane. Second of all, that study has never been debunked and will only be further vindicated as the Chinese master gene sequencing.

Black dude with a gun and conceal and carry permit was killed during a no knock raid in MN. Did they learn nothing from Floyd, Wright, or Castile? Very sad.

That body cam footage is some of the most enraging shit I've ever seen. Guy was a legal CCW holder, was not part of the warrant, and those fuckers blasted into his house in the middle of the night without announcing themselves and immediately shot him. You can plainly see in the vid his finger isn't even on the trigger and even if it was the Brianna Taylor case showed us already that shooting at no-knock raid crew is legally defensible. There aren't a ton of things I agree with hardcore lefties with on but I agree with defund the police. 2A for everyone and stop militarizing politically-controlled, trigger-happy goons of the state.

It's ridiculous to look at a few egregious videos and make a mass generalization on the profession.

In 2021 157 officers were killed in the line of duty (https://nleomf.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/2021-EOY-Fatality-Report-…) whereas 32-124 (range is because of Unknown category) unarmed people were killed by police (https://www.statista.com/statistics/585140/people-shot-to-death-by-us-p…). More officers are dying in service, then unarmed people being killed.

Are there bad apples? Of course there are. And I support them being prosecuted to the full extent of the law especially when there is no justifiable reason for deadly force being used. That's not the same as sweeping 99+% of the good apples under the rug due to the bad apples.

The fact of the matter is, police play an important role in enforcing law and order. If we defund police entirely, this country would resort to guerilla type every man for himself defense. Naturally this arrangement favors established cartels and gangs that have an influx of cash and money. You'll be begging for the police when a gang of 10 surround your house, kill you, abuse your wife, and rob all of the goods you have that you worked hard for in your finance career. And guess what? No one will come.

And if you're still not convinced give up your day job where your biggest difficulty is figuring out which color/font scheme should be your slide deck and become a police officer or body guard (after all you'll want to know how to defend yourself when the police are gone!) and see who most officers really are, and what type of work conditions many endure for the pay simply because they want to serve and protect their communities.

What do you mean by "2A for everyone"?  Are you suggesting that random people with guns can replace the police?  People with even less training on the subject?  I can shoot clays but I don't know how to arrest someone or defuse a situation.  All you get out of that is fools like the ones who shot Arbery taking control of the justice system with no oversight or control at all.

it's been Black History Month every single month for like 20+ months in a row ever since St. George overdosed on fentanyl and shitlibs formed a creepy emergent religion centered around them

there are entire weeks where I forget that hispanic people exist because the only minorities libs put in commercials are black people

Floyd didn't overdose.  Two autopsies and a toxicology report disproved that.  As Ben Shapiro says: facts don't care about your feelings
