Breaking up with Asset Management Connection

Hello WSO, I am an incoming Econ student (HYPW) in a difficult situation. I am currently in a happy HS relationship with a girl who's dad works at a very large asset management firm (think Fidelity, Blackrock, State Street). I really like the girl, but she's going to a different Ivy League school (read: she's busy and won't switch to a closer uni) multiple hours away from mine, so I'm expecting it to be difficult to maintain a relationship due to distance. I have a very good relationship with her dad, who's been something of a mentor to me regarding finance and has hinted at a possible Sophmore summer internship for me at his firm. So, my question is: How can I either maintain a very long distance relationship in college for two years or (more likely) split up in a way that maintains my relationship with my girlfriend's dad, so as to get the internship?

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

Don’t break her heart. Your prediction is likely correct but you should wait for her to come to the same realization after she’s made new friends, joined Greek life, etc. Once (if?) you guys are both realizing that breaking up is the right thing to do, reach out to her father and have an honest conversation with him. Explain that you’ve viewed him as a mentor for a while and that his advice and guidance has meant a lot to you and ask for a letter of recommendation. Make sure to get good grades and get involved on campus. I don’t think this guy can continue to be your main mentor after everything but you should be able to maintain the connection if you don’t break his daughters heart and approach the situation in a mature manner
