Buffet to pay down national debt

Buffet has agreed to match GOP congressional donations to pay down the national debt dollar for dollar. I was thinking we could sink buffet by getting the country to donate billions to the cause and having GOP congressional members to make the donation for us lol.

Buffet should just stay in his office and be quiet. I am sick of hearing about and seeing him on the news and in news stories.

Getting a bit too political for me as well. If he really wanted to change it and not just ruffle feathers - he'd open it up to all congressional members and not just G.O.P.'ers

Proof that both parties are equally full of shit. Neither could be bothered to actually decrease the national debt, Republicans just happen to use it as a bargaining chip like Democrats use social issues such as gay marriage.

My drinkin' problem left today, she packed up all her bags and walked away.

...exactly. He's calling them out on their shit. The GOP has added just as much debt as the democrats.

This is such a farce. Obvious political move that anyone can do basic math will see is less than a drop in the bucket. I wish he'd go back to just being the quiet investor that everyone admired and leave this horseshit to the talking heads.

Seconded, this is such a hollow gesture. Buffett is losing his grip on reality. He seems to have lost sight of the fact that having billions in net worth is much different than having a few hundred thousand in earnings or a million in the bank. I also guarantee that he wouldn't invest in a company with such a bloated, inefficient and wasteful bureaucracy as our federal government.

I'm not completely against some tax increases or reduction of certain tax credits, but these should only come in connection with massive spending cuts. The only way to dig ourselves out of this hole is to reign in govt spending.

$50,000,000,000 net worth = f*ck with politicians like a boss.

Buying stocks doesn't add value to the economy. Public equity investment is not a component of investments in the calculation of GDP. Perhaps Mr. Buffett can do something productive such as building a factory and hiring Americans instead of pursuing the maximization of shareholder value.

Translation: actually build something instead of concentrating capital. He's exactly the type of company that Teddy Roosevelt went after a century ago....and he was a Republican.

In theory, don't businesses use shareholder money to build things such as factories?

In theory, yes. In reality they just hold massive cash reserves in their Treasuries (because of "uncertainty)... a la GE and some big banks.

In theory, yes. In reality, no. Doing an equity offering is usually a last resort. If you have plans to GROW, it's usually done through debt financing.

[quote=freemarketeer]Don't be so stupid as to think Buffet doesn't know exactly what he's doing. He plays up the folsky Oracle of Omaha schtick so he can be a ruthless investor. He's calling out the GOP for all their bullshit.

A much easier way is to enforce higher estate tax and forbid super-riches to roll their money into some kind of funds. Oh, also needs to patch loopholes that allow big corporations to evade its tax.

So let me understand something. Someone works their entire life for wealth and the government should have the right to arbitrarily take it?

Yeah, no fucking way.

Corporations don't pay taxes, they just collect it for the government.

Because dead persons have no need for money anymore. BTW I'm just joking.
