Buying Watches Online.... advice

I've had some money put aside for a while to finally get myself a Rolex (yeah yeah I know), but I've always been a big watch guy and I'm ready to pull the trigger on one.

I've been eyeing the 39mm Oyster Perpetual with the Rhodium dial. This model got discontinued so I'd need to get it second hand. Looks like they go between $7-8k on Chrono24. I've been looking at an app called Bezel which seems pretty legit, and I think eBay can be an option since they have an authentication process.

Any tips for buying online?

Go with a trusted grey dealer (Chrono24 is included in this if you select the proper filters) if you’re buying secondhand. Don’t get scammed.

Some watch subreddits have a masterlist of trusted grey dealers.

There’s also Bobs watches and David SW and OC watch guy. All legit sellers and between the 3 of them I’d bet you can find what you are looking for.

eBay has one of the best authentication infrastructures for used luxury watches in the world hands down. I've bought & sold Rolex Subs, Omegas, and Panerais through them with 0 issue. By far the safest way and widest selection you'll find.

There's plenty of bellyaching across reddit about problems people have encountered but I would argue they should blame the sellers they're choosing to buy from for not being trustworthy, not eBay itself. If they're not discerning about the seller's review history and have no idea what they're doing of course there's risk - but I challenge anyone to name a larger second-hand market place dealing exclusively with 3rd party sellers that offers a comparable selection and includes authentication services for high ticket purchases + a money-back guarantee. Having personally bought/sold 20+ watches on the platform with almost 0 issues (and reasonably quick resolutions for the few I've had), I'll stick by them.

I know it's slightly off-topic, but what makes you lust after the Oyster Perpetual?  I'm always interested in hearing what drives people to particular watches.  My personal favorite is a little $400 microbrand dress(ish) watch with a Tiffany blue dial and a Miyota high-beat movement.  It just looks formal yet fun.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

If you like it so much why not post a pic

Apparently linking to the company's page for the watch got my comment deleted.  Here it is, and it looks like they're running a huge sale, at $250 it's $100 less than I've ever seen it before.  It's called "Islander Watch"

...And apparently the image won't post either. You have to love WSO sometimes. Herer's the link, but replace the with a period.  Hopefully this doesn't get deleted.

A combination of the simplicity and the price. I like the Oyster Bracelet, I like the smooth bezel, I like how the dial is symmetrical and how the hour markers look. I think the Rhodium color is really cool, too. Also, and yeah this is a bit shallow, but I think owning a Rolex is a bit of a milestone (at least for watch people) and I want to achieve that. I have a dive watch already so a simplistic everyday watch would be a good addition to the collection. I actually think I like the 38mm Omega Aqua Terra "shades" models a little more than the 39mm OP, but like I said, I need to just scratch the Rolex itch I have first.

Generally speaking I usually shop on eBay for my watches.

Biggest advice is to know the watch you want inside out & cross reference other photos (checking the dial, case proportions & especially the watch movement). If something doesn’t look right, don’t risk it (also make sure to check the serial number to see if it’s within a reasonable range of what the manufacturer may issue). Having that manual check will probably give you the biggest peace of mind when buying secondary market.

Second would be to buy the eBay authentication guarantee service just in case (costs about $80).

Finally, I would trust eBay watch sellers from Japan as they have much more stringent quality control for watches. Their vintage market is especially huge + lower purchasing power vs USD so you will get pretty fair or undervalued prices on vintage pieces.
