By when should you know that you're interested in finance?

Before college? Freshman year? Later?

I'm a freshman at a top target, hopefully a statistics major. Since about two years ago, I've been interested in consulting. (My sister's at MBB, so I've heard a bit about it from her.) Ever since I started college, though, I've felt like there are WAY more finance opportunities than consulting ones, which is pushing me to consider i-banking, etc.

Except I don't know anything about finance. Not really. I've been helping my boyfriend prep for interviews, so I "understand" DCFs, links between financial statements, etc. but it all feels like cardboard knowledge. When I read WSJ, etc. I often feel like things are passing over my head.

Is it realistic to aim for finance internships for sophomore year? Should I already have a good grasp on how the markets work? Should I just shelf the idea of finance entirely?

Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if this isn't posted in the right place.

OP, I feel the same way, except I'm a junior currently hunting for a SA position.

I think my previous bank internships just strengthened my foundation and interest in Finance.

I can perform; it's just hard getting in that SA door. Keep positive and keep pushing.
