Nokia finally unveiled its new windows phone, the Lumia, to a crowd in London today. This is the first smartphone unveiled since February when Nokia announced that it would be using Windows as the OS on their new smartphones along with bing as the default search engine. Nokia now just has one more thing to announce, can they actually compete?
Nokia used to be the #1 smartphone vendor in the world until Apple and Samsung pushed them out (they are now #3). Nokia needed a big change and chose to place their money with the Microsoft, seemingly an odd choice since the Windows phones were not nearly as popular as their Apple and Andriod competitors. In fact, Windows phones only had a 2% market share in the second quarter of this year. However, with Nokia's full backing, Microsoft and Nokia hope that the phones will turn into a hit and turn around their fortunes. Here are some specs of the new phone that will hit the US in early 2012.

The Kin Phone was the best phone on the planet. Judging from past success, Nokia will be very successful.
I actually have a Windows Phone 7...definitely far and above Android (awful, fragmented environment for developers and customers), on par with iPhone. I think in the US where everyone is willing to spend 2x-3x more on an iPhone (because it's shiny and my friends told me to) there's no chance but I can see it taking the lion's share in emerging markets and europe.
Besides, all the apps are built with c# in .net, aka you can use visual studio. I think this is why the app quality will be better.
It's a windows, non-OS/office suite product. So no, it can't compete.

Xbox. Though I will agree that Microsoft faces a huge uphill battle - I still haven't seen a single Windows Phone 7 ad on TV. The OS is great, but nobody knows about it.
Thats probably gonna change. Microsfot have apparently given loads of money towards marketing nokia windows phones (and also to Samsung I think). Since the phone was annouced this morning in the hour and a half of TV I watched this evening I saw two Nokia Windows adverts and I think one generic windows 7 advert that featured windows phones.
I'm quite taken with the look of windows phone, but I'd have to play about with it first. All I know is that I find my android HTC desire laggy and unpolished so I won't be getting an android, I liked my old blackberry but they've proven themselves unreliable recently, and every other person seems to have an iphone nowadays.

Yes. I personally hate the android platform and I've been using ios for three years so I'm bored of it. My next phone will be a windows phone.
About 6 months ago I traded in my iPhone for a windows phone (samsung focus).
Overall, I really love my phone. There are a couple things that I miss about my iPhone, but there is so much potential in the windows phone OS. Right now I would say that iOS is still the best there is, but WP is catching up, and it is happening really fast (2 major updates within a year of release).
Compared to Android, I don't think there is any comparison - WP wins hands down.
Time will tell if this catches fire or not. However, Nokia is probably the only mobile device maker that can give Apple a run for its money when it comes to build quality and design. I feel like the marriage between great software and great hardware should be a success, but of course it is not always that simple.
