Car Selection

Debating on a Toyota or Lexus. I want the last v6 or v8 so looking at the 4runner limited vs the GX. Paying cash unless get a good offer for high credit individuals. My car lasted me through under grad and grad school. Don't want a luxury car as people can't drive for their life around here and honestly see a another dip in the market coming and rather dump money into the economy. I like to keep cars till about 200k miles then get something new. Is it worth the extra 20k for the GX luxury over the 4runner, or should I keep the cash and invest it?

If you're paying cash at the dealer, most places let you put $5K on a credit card and the rest in cash (so you can get $5K on your best points card).

Unless you can’t live without the more upmarket touches and features I’d go with the 4Runner. I bet the GX would be easier to sell in the near term but if you’re planning on driving it for 200k I think your future buyer is going to be pretty price sensitive and you will always be able to sell a well maintained 4runner to the off-roading crowd

A Lexus isn't worth it. Doesn't feel like real luxury yet you still pay out the ass like it's real luxury for every little thing that needs repaired. Either go all out or go with a Honda or Toyota. That 4Runner will actually go 200k miles and/or people will always be looking for used 4Runners if you want to trade it in.

Comparing a 4Runner to a Lexus is like comparing apples to oranges.  A 4runner is a truck but a truck that gets great reviews and is very reliable.  The cargo space is almost 50 cu. I am in the market for a car and now I might consider it but I would have to drive it to see it it meets my need for comfort.  Lexus cars are built for luxury and are very comfortable for an old guy like me.  Most young people do not drive a Lexus unless it is a IS 250, which is a very sporty version of it.

If you have the need for lots of room and storage, the 4 runner would be a very good choice.  If you like luxury, status and comfort. there are better cars for young investment bankers like an IS 250, an Acura or a Mazda,.or even an Audi.

The Lexus he’s talking about is essentially the four runner but nicer

The Lexus GX is probably driven by an older family guy with money and it is expensive.  Most young guys do not need all of the space

I've actually been comparing these exact same two. I'm leaning towards the GX because a few years used it is basically the same price as a few years used premium 4runner. Although the new GX is coming out soon and they look really nice. I'm holding off and waiting for the 4runner update probably in 2025 and then buying either the GX or 4runner a few years used.

I would get the GX. At least it has a more upscale interior. Do you plan to actually off road this car? The 4Runner drives like a dog on the road.
