Dems Poised To Make IRS Larger Than Pentagon, State Department, FBI, and Border Patrol Combined

https://freebeacon.com/policy/dems-poised-to-make…

“Under the Inflation Reduction Act negotiated by Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.), the agency would receive $80 billion in funding to hire as many as 87,000 additional employees. The increase would more than double the size of the IRS workforce, which currently has 78,661 full-time staffers, according to federal data.

The additional IRS funding is integral to the Democrats' reconciliation package. A Congressional Budget Office analysis found the hiring of new IRS agents would result in more than $200 billion in additional revenue for the federal government over the next decade. More than half of that funding is specifically earmarked for "enforcement," meaning tax audits and other responsibilities such as "digital asset monitoring."

That would make the IRS one of the largest federal agencies. The Pentagon houses roughly 27,000 employees, according to the Defense Department, while a human resources fact sheet says the State Department employs just over 77,243 staff. The FBI employs approximately 35,000 people, according to the agency's website, and Customs and Border Protection says it employs 19,536 Border Patrol agents.

The money allocated to the IRS would increase the agency's budget by more than 600 percent. In 2021, the IRS received $12.6 billion.”

Was not expecting the IRS to receive this but im all for it. The IRS is the engine that makes our gov't go, can't believe it was neglected for so long

Also LOL that this article used "the pentagon" to refer to literally just those that work in the building. Obviously people are going to read this and interpret "the pentagon" to mean the entire DoD.

The IRS is the engine that makes our gov't go

The precise reason many people should want the damn thing disbanded. The last thing this government needs is more money and the fact that they have an income tax at all is laughable when you see how much money they just print by borrowing from the Fed, which is something our great grandchildren will probably never pay off at the rate it's growing. Social Security is literally the largest ponzi scheme ever, which is going to see a reckoning as population growth decreases and less people are paying into it. Both the IRS and the Fed are two most anti-American organizations Congress has ever been convinced to approve.

As someone who's basic individual taxes were filed in late March and who still doesn't have his 5 figure refund, I am all for this. Yes, my returns were done on paper, but still ridiculous. The IRS just finished 2021 taxes made on paper, so it'll probably be 2023 before I receive my refund for my 2021 taxes. Beyond absurd how backwards that organization is. Although I'd prefer if they'd actually employ software from this century to help them do their job.

When there aren't enough people to have even taken a look at pretty basic individual taxes they received more than 4 months ago, yes, one of the solutions is more money for hiring. The IRS has much less funding than it did a decade ago, especially once adjusted for inflation and number of returns it processes. And it now audits very few people relative to a decade ago - current funding levels are just asking people to commit tax fraud. This is just about the only gov't spending that might actually pay for itself.

Of course, politicians should uncomplicate taxes and make it super easy, but it's not in their interest to do so, so it'll never happen, and it'll get more complex with each passing year.

I am fine with this but the worst part is this will ofc disproportionately affect middle/upper middle class. They nickel and dime us on taxes already but these cowards still didn't close the carried interest loophole. The corporate slave fuckery continues.

Not to pick on you, but I see this over and over again. People getting together and acknowledging the problems created by those who we have entrusted our homes, families, communities, security and future to. Instead of fighting for you they screw you over. Still, all one does is complain and post about it on the internet.

I've been hitting the library to learn more about the history of our country and taking notes while looking toward the future. I invite you to do the same and then collaborate with like minded individuals on educating your community and pushing your cause upstream.

Good on Biden for doing this.  The Republicans purposely underfunded the IRS for years, right now we have less auditors than we did in the 1950s, despite the massive growth in wealth over the years.  And of course the ultra rich made out like bandits, because the agency that ensures they pay taxes is on life support.  Even worse, the GOP has shifted the remaining IRS funds into investigating working people who improperly claim tax deductions.  Yep, that's right.  When it came to the regular people the GOP did a complete 180.

It's part of the GOP scam that happens again and again and again.  Republicans purposely ruin the government, then they say "look, big government doesn't work", and then they use that as an excuse to further dismantle the government, screwing over average American.

Most interactions an ordinary person has with the IRS are fully automated.  Auditors are needed for big corporations and very wealthy people.  Which is why Republicans are hell bent on lowering the IRS headcount.

A large number of other countries the individual does not file income taxes (in most cases) as the taxing agency prefills a document online that states this is what their records show your taxes should be and you take action based upon what you see. The IRS has all of the information it needs for this but they have not been allowed to make it more efficient due to the lobbying of interested groups and companies like Tax Legal Profession, TurboTax and HR Block, etc...  Last year I did my normal yearly TurboTax and guess what, they sent me a letter a couple of months later informing me that I had overpaid due to a 1 time change and sent me a check. We can complain all we want about paying taxes and the IRS but they can make it much better and efficient if allowed.

We don't need more IRS agents, the rich just need to pay their fair share (Looking at you Bezos).

It's pretty amazing that we live in a country where the government doesn't know what you owe for tax at the end of the year.  So they have to hire a bunch of IRS agents on their side to determine if what you paid is reasonably acceptable.  On the other side, there are CPAs, EAs, attorneys, and so forth who are working to help you pay as little tax as you legally can.

Imagine if all that effort were put forth to actually producing a product or delivering a service.  It's the epitome of wasted professional time.
