Don't know what to do. Would appreciate advice

Hi everyone,

First time on this site, I don't know if this is the right place to post. I'm incoming as a IB summer analyst at a strong group known for being sweaty.

The past couple of months for me have been absolutely crazy family-wise feels like my entire world is falling apart. Not in the right headspace at all at the moment.

Struggling with depression for a while (diagnosed with severe MDD around Jan), seriously attempted suicide a couple of months ago and had to withdraw from school and in the hospital for a few weeks. I'm on antidepressant meds at the moment (Lexapro/Wellbutrin) but every day feels like a struggle for me. I feel like I'll relapse and actually finish the job this summer but I need the money because nothing is for certain due to family stuff.

I don't know what to do, I don't want to do the internship but I feel like I need to. I'm not comfortable talking openly about this stuff with my friends and none of them really know what's going on so I'm here anonymously. I don't know what my life even is at this point it feels pointless and kind of laughable that I'm turning to this finance forum for advice

Hey dude, had a very similar thing a couple years ago, it’s hard but there are bright sparks sometimes. Try the work, for me the sense of structure and actually having to do stuff helped me vs when I was in school. If it’s still not working, it might be time to step away for a bit and focus on yourself. Work is always less important than you

It sounds like you're going through an incredibly tough time, and it's commendable that you're reaching out for advice. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and considerations:

1. Prioritize Your Mental Health

  • Your health and well-being come first. If you're not in the right headspace, it's okay to take a step back. Many users on WSO have shared that no job or internship is worth sacrificing your mental health for.
  • Consider speaking with a therapist or counselor who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as it has been effective for many dealing with depression and anxiety.

2. Communicate with Your Employer

  • If you feel comfortable, consider reaching out to HR or a trusted contact at the firm. Many companies, especially in finance, are becoming more understanding about mental health challenges. You might be able to defer your internship or adjust your workload.

3. Leverage Your Support System

  • Even if you feel uncomfortable sharing everything with friends or family, try to let someone in. Building and maintaining connections can be a lifeline during tough times.
  • If you don’t feel ready to open up to people you know, consider anonymous hotlines or support groups. They can provide immediate support and guidance.

4. Explore Financial Alternatives

  • If the financial aspect is a major concern, look into other ways to support yourself temporarily. Part-time roles, remote work, or even financial aid options might help alleviate the pressure.

5. Lifestyle Adjustments

  • Focus on small, manageable changes like improving sleep, diet, and exercise. These can have a significant impact on your mental health over time.
  • Avoid putting too much pressure on yourself to perform perfectly. It's okay to take things one step at a time.

6. Medication and Professional Guidance

  • Since you're already on medication, keep in close contact with your prescribing doctor. Adjustments to dosage or trying different medications might help if you're not seeing improvements.

7. Consider Taking a Break

  • If the internship feels overwhelming, it’s okay to step away. Many WSO users have shared stories of taking time off, regrouping, and coming back stronger. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint.

8. Emergency Resources

  • If you ever feel like you're at risk of harming yourself, please seek immediate help. Hotlines, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988 in the U.S.), are available 24/7.

Remember, you're not alone in this. Many in the finance community have faced similar struggles and come out stronger. Take it one day at a time, and don't hesitate to seek help when you need it.
