Escape plan to Montana
For all of the talk of personal finance on this site, I'm shocked no one has mentioned the importance of an escape home.
What's your plan when we get hit with another and more dangerous plague? America falls into a socialist revolution? The global economy tanks?
Sure, considering these things will make you seem like a conspiracy nut, but if 2020 has proved anything to me it's that I need to start saving for a self-sustaining home in Montana.
"They will call you crazy until they realize you were right"
I think the best approach is to suit your vacation home also as an escape compound. Instead of buying a second property in Miami, buy in upstate NY like Lake Placid or Lake George. Kills two birds with one stone.
Miami is disgusting and I don’t understand why people like it. The only palatable place in Florida is Palm Beach but I’m not a billionaire so fuck that
Women + coke
Completely off-grid home in desolation wilderness in the Sierra Nevadas. Water filtration from nearby stream and well + solar + enough non-perishable food to last quite some time + several firearms = we'll be good.
Edit: I don't think things will get bad enough I'll ever "need" to use this.. at least I hope not. But it does make for a good place to disconnect and relax here and there, not to mention the backcountry skiing in the winter months is virtually unparalleled.
Agreed, bro. Escape homes are utterly essential.
Not essential yet, just smart to consider
Just because I find this amusing - why Montana of all places?
If you’re escaping because of a pandemic, wouldn’t an island, and preferably one with both free healthcare and a high quality of care, be preferable?
If you’re escaping because of a “socialist revolution,” why would you stay in the same country as said revolution?
And this kids... is what happens to your brain when you go into real estate.
Username checks out.
Technically if you're right about this, they won't be saying anything as they will be dead.
“if 2020 has proved anything...”
^ this. and it’s not over yet. imagine the riots and looting that could potentially occur if trump is re-elected.
the last few weeks have shown that if you don’t like something, violent looting and rioting are the way to voice your dissent. if you’re “woke” enough, the leftist politicians may even support you.
even if Biden is elected, I have a sneaking suspicion that the radical right won’t take it laying down; what has trump EVER done to make you think that he would peacefully transition power? also, I think a good number of people are fed up being locked inside by the govt for 3 months, watching the business they built go under due to the govt mandated lockdowns, and then seeing massive violations of social distancing (including rioting and looting) being commended by leftist politicians. kinda a proverbial kick in the nuts for the working class mom and pop store owner in small town America.
rant over. the solution: buy guns, buy a remote 2d home (I like Vermont / NH / Maine - East coast guy). at the very least actively research an area to go - both for a nice wilderness trip and if things go sideways.
Agree with most, but Trump will absolutely leave office in Jan ‘21 no matter what if he loses the election. The country has had seamless transition of power every election since its existence. No authority - secret service, FBI, even the US military - will allow the results of the election to be ignored.
Even if the unthinkable happens - something that makes Bush v. Gore 2000 look uncontroversial - whoever the Supreme Court allows to be certified (assuming a similar path as the 2000 decision) will be president in Jan ‘21.
Someone mentioned this on another thread, but essentially they noted that if Trump loses, he'll likely do everything he possibly can between November and January to instigate chaos. Imagine how much he could do in two months without the prospect of a reelection hanging over his head.
Not saying it'll happen, but also wouldn't be surprised if 2020 goes out with a bang and 2021 starts as a giant mess.
Kind of uncanny reading this stuff now.
Wyoming for the taxes.... How does a real estate guy not know that? Teton county is now #1 in USA. You don't even have to pay taxes on mineral rights.
I procured a second passport in 2019, this was definitely not a primary factor, but it certainly occurred to me as a secondary consideration.
A bunker is cool too, but apocalypse LARP-ing seems like it will get dull pretty quickly. Better to just go live in an alternative functional society. Not all the world is in the same shit right now.
I'm assuming by this you mean you applied for dual citizenship? Where at out of curiosity?
Depends how much money you have. You can buy a nuclear bunker for $1-$5 million. You would need to ration food for the next 100+ years with canned food and water. Realistically you would need $10,000,000+. Water doesn't expired but it will acquire the taste of the surroundings through the plastic. Just find a nuclear bunker with heavily locked doors that is minimum 2,000+ pounds.
If shit hit the fan in the US, I would probably move to Singapore, Switzerland, or Australia. In the event of a full scale revolution, I don't think traditional modes of transportation would be possible so a second residence in a remote area probably wouldn't even be accessible. You're better off investing in firearms, non-perishable food, and a bunker if you're that paranoid
Personally I think if anything, after all of this, you are truly fucked if it's a plague or anything similar. It will move so fast you just have to get 'lucky' - basically it's Stephen King's the Stand in real life.
For the rest - yeah, having a place in the mountains that's out of the way would be pretty cool. I think Post Malone bought some crazy place in Utah or something with a bunker, etc.
Do it! take pics
I heard there’s some investment bank up there called Davidson or something. Not sure about exit opps, or bonus, or even deal flow, but a solid off the grid IB-type gig does exist almost anywhere I guess...
Didn’t believe you Initially until I googled it

HQ In a city of 60K in Montana

Based on the description doesn’t seem like a bad gig if OP decides it’s time to make the move.
Your plan is sound if you make friends with the militia men on the front end.
Ibiza
The problem with Montana/Miami is it’s still in America.
When this country implodes you need to escape to somewhere safe in the Southern Hemisphere with your $$$ and low taxes.
I have been prepping for years. Instead of a predetermined location, we decided that having a mobile home when the SHTF to get to isolation was OUR families best option. Thousand mile range, live off grid, stocked to the gills with replacement parts, tools, supplies, etc. We seriously looked at a 250+ acre ranch at Porthill, ID which is directly abuts the Canadian border, but couldnt come up with a way to get there. We were also concerned with potential Yellowstone caldera issues.
We decided on mobile guns, gold and grub to get us to safety. We have heirloom seeds to get us past year one, water purification etc. We can work remotely while the system continues to break down and pull our savings and transfer to physical precious metals.
Risks? Yep. Travel might get restricted. Roving gangs might control roadways. Bridges may be out.
Just our plan. Yours will definitely vary.
I feel like fearing for Caldera is silly. If that shit goes we're almost all dead regardless of where in the continental US you are.
Actually...

Two of the latest models. While the probability IS small, having my bugout property in Montana would be a strong no (forgetting about Hanford, of course which is now happening in real time). Under this scenario, north to Maine or east to the Appalachians.
