Help WSO Land 2012 Sponsors

Over the years, many WSO members have asked me how they can help WSO....and over the years I've always asked them to contribute high quality content and good advice in the forums, and most of you have.

Now, however, there is a more concrete way you can help.

Help us fill our 2012 Sponsorship spots - at the bottom of this blog post you download a PDF with all of the different options and prices. I think if any of your firms want to reach thousands of highly qualified young finance professionals and students trying to break into these fields, our prices are hard to beat (compared to other financial websites, our rates are MUCH cheaper because we run lean).

Please feel free to download this Media Package and pass it to your HR coordinator and/or person in charge of marketing. We offer sponsor options as low as a few thousand dollars/year up to a $25,000 package. These spots can be purchased for employers wanting more exposure (various "Featured Employer" options) as well as companies that would like to gain more exposure to our demographic in general.

I'd really appreciate your help spreading the word and e-mailing our 2012 Media Package to as many people as you can. There are limited spots available for each sponsor option, so if your company is interested, please let us know asap.

Thanks,
Patrick

My honest opinion: the posts on this site need to be regulated better if you want more serious interest from corp sponsors. Imagine you are a potential sponsor looking through this website to see what its about, then you click on this - http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/when-i-pull-an-all-nighter-i - and that topic is on the first page. Imagine what would go through a potential sponsor's head after reading the comments on that thread.

Political threads should be deleted as well. Check out the hot topics section, most are politcal. This website is about industry, not politics. This isnt HuffPo, yet the political coments are just as idiotic. I think it also skews the banana point system, as most members would probably throw monkey shit to users who have a difference of opinion over political issues, not because they give poor advice.

Not to mention that this site does have kind of a cartoon-ish feeling, with the monkey and banana theme. Corps are obviously conservative and I dont think this website's theme/interface reflects that.

Basically, either police your website like the internet Gestapo, or dump the corp sponsor idea. It would be much easier just to dump the corp sponsor idea. Again, just my opinion.

Thanks RE - appreciate the candid response. I realize there is a lot of content on WSO that is not finance oriented, but I think companies are getting more comfortable with that ...especially as social media is seen more and more as a viable place to build brand and advertise.

Additionally, if they read that thread on an all-nighter, hopefully they would realize that we have an incredibly engaged community here, even if it does frequently go off-topic. (same thing with the political topics).

I agree that we do have a cartoonish feel....I guess we'll just have to wait and see if sponsors are interested in reaching the WSO community or not. You could very well be right, but I think it's worth a shot. We have a very active job board, so clearly recruiters and companies don't have a problem posting positions with us - I don't think they'll have a problem sponsoring us just because we have a bit more fun as well.

I guess only time will tell. If by March we haven't placed any sponsorships, I will admit defeat. Until then, let's see how it goes.

I just wanted to add to the conversation. All the points made are valid ones. What I found attractive about WSO is it's informal nature and unique user base. A place where you could post an extremely technical question that only a few people would know how to answer, and at the same time ask what everyones favorite Christmas movie is. WSO is kind of like a friendly lounge for Finance professionals and aspiring students that mixes business and pleasure. Finance by nature is conservative and formal and it's good to have a place with down-to-earth people willing to help one another.

As far as monetizing goes, I think that corporate sponsors are definitely viable. Of course there probably aren't going to be too many financial service companies looking to buy up space - for the previously mentioned reasons. However, companies pay big money to reach concentrated niche markets. There aren't too many other places where the user base is primarily (I'm assuming here): males, in their early to mid twenties, employed in the finance/consulting sector (or will be), highly educated, and among/will be among the top earners in the US. There are definitely companies out there who target that demographic.

Where are all the WSO consultants out there? We have to think "outside the box."

True, you have a point. If corporate sponsorship will at least cover the marketing costs for going after that kind of funding, then why not try.

Here's an example of what I am talking about - http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/help-my-balls-stink

How the hell is that relevant to a finance discussion forum and how is it that that poster though this would be a good target demographic to answer his question? Its stuff like this that will undermine you efforts for corp sponsorship.

I get that this is a public internet forum where anyone can register and post, but this guy's IP address should be banned for life.

I agree that thread was stupid / useless / trolling which is why it was deleted.... but to ban the IP for life and/or over censor this community I think is also a mistake. We have an Off-topic forum for a reason. As long as threads like this are in the minority and they are placed in the proper area, we try not to ban users that are trying to have fun / start a stupid discussion.

Believe it or not, people come onto WSO for more than just finance information. A lot of visitors come for that information, but stay for the community and the sense of humor frequently displayed in the forums. Sometimes it crosses a line and is totally inappropriate, but we try to keep censorship to a minimum. I think it says a lot that the thread you mentioned had 0 comments for several hours. That kills the thread by default.

It also is very difficult to stay on top of every post made given the # of discussions going on every day. I think our moderators do a great job and we have significantly reduced the # of troll threads in 2011.

I agree that threads like the one you mentioned could hurt our chances for corporate sponsorship, but I also think over censorship is also one of the quickest ways to kill the community. It's never an easy balance and we'll keep trying to do our best to make sure that the majority of the discussions on here are thoughtful and helpful to other users.

Thanks, Patrick

Yes, I see your point.

But I just have to mention that most of the "humor" on this website tends to be poor and comes off immature more often than not. Even from the certified users. Anyway, that kind of stuff is trivial and shouldn't make as big of a negative impact on corp sponsorship as the immature and irrelevant troll threads that pop up once in a blue moon.

Good luck with the fund raising.
