Holiday Tips

2nd Year Analyst here living in NYC. Was wondering how much you guys give to your administrative assistant for the holidays. Also, how much to building staff? I have several doormen at my building, in addition to the Super and maintenance crew. What is the acceptable amount these days? Also do you give cash or check? Thanks.

It depends on: how close you are with each of them/how good they are. My one doorman is a real stand up guy, always offers to help, and is always smiling. I tossed him $200 last year and will do the same this year. The rest got $50 each (they don't even remember my name half the time). Always cash.

Admin staff def varies firm to firm. Ask your co-workers.

Edit: The $50 a person was what I estimated the number per doorman/staff to be. I also don't live in a full-service building with a pool and shit.

Edit: That rentenna guide is really helpful.

Bear in mind that these are Manhattan rules. In Hoboken/Jersey City where we have attendants rather than doormen, the rules are a little thriftier depending on your building. In my old building in New Jersey, the rule was that their base pay covered buzzing you in and signing for packages, and you tipped throughout the year when exceptional service was rendered. (Grabbing the door when you have groceries, carrying stuff for you, covering for your car parked in the fire lane, letting in furniture deliveries, fixing clogged sinks.)

In general, check with the residents of your building for advice. But yes, you have to tip your doormen and building supers.
