How does one find a mentor?

Hey,

So I went to a non-target undergrad in the UK. Got my first and smashed all my finance modules. Got offered a scholarship by a target university to study finance so obviously I took it. But right now in all honesty, I’m a little bit up in the air. My first and second year undergrad internships I got off my own back, i have no friends or family in this industry and I’m just looking for a mentor who’s in the game. I ain’t gonna beg for a job, I want a genuine mentor who’s gonna look at everything I’ve got and say “you gotta sort this shit out” or “that shit is good” - Or something to that effect.

But my question is.. how do I find one of these mentors?

I’ve been pursuing a career in S&T but I have an open mind to what’s out there in finance and accepting of ideas.

I've recruited mentors my whole life, not because I'm super clever, it was more fan-boyish. In short, find someone who's shoes you want to be in in 5-20 years, introduce yourself, find some commonalities, find something you can do for them (probably for free), do a great job on it, do that again and figure out what you want (slowly) in return.

That's like asking how does one find a friend. In the UK, I assume that means getting pissed at the pub and finding someone who supports the same football team.

I’ve had three mentors mainly. One died and I lost contact with the other.

The third person I correspond with now went the traditional WSO path - Ivy undergrad to hedge fund. Then she went from life coach at FNAAG to independent life coach. She is one of the smartest people I have met.

Yeah her focus is very similar to Wendy. She used to be hot in her prime and also used to teach bikram yoga on the side.

We have actually hooked up in the past. In 2009. Then one year we were both single and I invited her to be my valentine date a few years ago in NYC. I think we know that we are not meant for each other, so we kind of treat it like that. She charges a lot per hour to talk, but never has talked of charging me. We talk as intellectuals. Its a pretty good relationship. She also said she would recommend me for FNAAG positions, but I haven't seen a position I've really liked a lot. I am open to corporate strategy, but don't want any responsibilities in IT - like programming and coding. I like pure financial analysis / business analysis / corporate strategy roles, but currently can't pursue these roles due to other responsibilities.

Thats cool, man. Having that kind of relationship is fun. Flirty, both know it cant/wont happen, but you're adults about it.

Hopefully that sweet spot opens up for ya in FAANG and you get a great options package.

Go all the way
