How To Handle Hospital Bills

I was in an accident last year and had to spend 2 weeks in the ICU. I have insurance, but they didn't cover a lot of it. They covered most of it, actually, but what they didn't cover is still a lot to me as I'm a poor college kid.

I applied for the hospital's financial assistance and got pardoned, I guess you'd call it. They adjusted what I owe to $0.

But I've still been getting bills from every doctor who saw me during my time there. A lot of them are independent of the hospital, I guess.

At first, I was sending them copies of my pardon letter, but eventually, I just gave up and started stacking bills in a pile. This was stupid, I know. But I'm trying to join the Navy now and I want to fix any outstanding financial issues before I apply for security clearance and get my credit checked.

I got a letter saying that one of them had put me on collection.

I made a copy of the pardon letter and a copy of my insurance card and am mailing them out in reply to each bill that I got.

The biggest bill is for around $1,500. They're maybe $500 each on average.

Should this be sufficient to get some of them off of my back? Do you think that most of them will just write off the debt?

How do I handle the collection agency? I can probably come up with the money to pay just that one bill from the one doctor who put me on collection, but if all of them do it, I may as well not bother.

Considering that this was in May of 2012 and I've only gotten letters from one collection agency about one bill, do you suppose that the rest have written it off as bad debt? I haven't gotten a bill from anyone in a few months.

Will bad debt write-offs affect my credit, or just being on collection? And if I pay off my collection bill, is it better for my credit than just ignoring them? Does being put on collection ding your credit or continued nonpayment as well? Is there redemption in paying, I guess is what I'm asking.

How should I handle this situation?

When you go to the Hospital, you get billed for administrative, anesthesia, surgeon etc....

The Hospital can pardon your administrative bill because this is owed directly to the hospital, however, the remaining bills might be independent of the hospital , thus not covered by the pardon letter. I could be wrong about the case because I don't have the bill in front of me.

What you need to do is call the bills that are not in collection to verify if they were supposed to be covered by the pardon letter or if they are independent bills from the physicians. The one with the collection agency is another story. You can always try yo contact the original debtor to see if the bill was not settle with the letter. Otherwise, you might have to just pay your bill. ,

Bad debt writeoffs, also known as chargeoffs will really ding your credit score, particularly if there is an unpaid balance. Do everything you can to get on payment plans, settle for half the due amounts, etc. Much of it is negotiable if you come up with the right story. These are likely all separate bills from the different doctors/clinics, so you will be in for quite a ride. Good luck

Had a friend who had a $800 bill from a hospital. He convinced billing department to let him pay in very small increments each month. I believe it was like $10 a month or so. I'd discuss this option with them.
