Internal lateral moves - need advice
Hey guys.. I just got an offer to internally move to a different team on my floor. (think strategy to sales, or sales to trading, etc.. ) Similar products. Old (current) team regular interacts with new team.
I'm trying to move gracefully:
- new desk also wants me to start like.. tomorrow. obviously not going to happen
- old desk wants me there as long as I train my replacement
- old desk is slow at deciding who to hire to replace me, so I don't even have a person or time line
- if I stay too long it'll piss off new desk
- if I move too quickly it'll piss off old desk which works w/ new desk regularly
How do I gracefully balance both and get the f out asap?
THANKS!
My 2 cents....
it may help to solidify a date. This in turn will put pressure on your current desk to make a decision on a new hire so you can begin training that person. This also keeps the future desk from becoming impatient as they can come to terms with that specific date.
hey there,
this is an interesting choice and I actually just saw this happen in my group twice. (2 people joined my department from another group in the company). They both gave their respective former groups a one-month notice, but told the new group they'd start the on-boarding process when they can. Now one person is alternating between old and new for a month (one week at new, one week at old, then new then old) before she officially starts at the new position, while the other person just comes to the group for some meetings and do the rest via emails and conference calls.
I think you can pitch that and help with the transitions. But you really don't need to do anything for longer than a month.
I've been in a similar situation. Bottom line is that you can't avoid pissing off your old team at least a little if you don't want to be pissed off yourself. Suggesting a date could work if the old team honors it, but come date time, they may just extend or ignore it. My suggestion would be to try to set up an arrangement where you move to the new team as soon as possible and work on old team stuff (like training replacement) while officially on the new team. So you'll be multi-tasking / pulling more hours, but you avoid a lot of the issues that would be there otherwise. And then you can wean off the old team stuff on your own terms.
