Moving to London?

Just curious on how that would work? I am a US citizen very interested in moving to London just for the experience of living in another country. I’ve read on the laws, and it appears I have to secure employment to get a work permit and visa. Are companies willing to do this, or will I need to network heavily to even be considered?

In general the IB culture (at least at BB banks) in London is less about networking since the application process to these banks is very well structured. I think it heavily depends on your seniority level: are you applying as an analyst/associate or as a VP? And things like this.

Even if I said this, it totally doesn't hurt networking. Contact people on LinkedIn at London with whom you have stuff in common (share same alma maters, previous employers,...) ask them about the culture at the bank/team, and if they know about any positions that will be opening soon in their teams (or in other teams).

Big banks will never have a problem sponsoring your visa

PS: feel free to check this website, it talks about the new UK's point-based immigration system

Thank you very much for your reply. I would

be going in as an analyst, with just commercial banking experience. I know it’s a long shot but I will definitely try. Thank you for the resource as well

From my experience, the UK does value diversity a lot! I have a friend from university who studied Theology and now she's working in M&A at Morgan Stanley, so I do believe your experience is more relevant hahaha. Write good cover letters, ace the online tests after you apply to the position and you'll definitely get some interviews. That's when networking may come in handy, when you get to talk about your interactions with other analysts at the bank and how that positive influence has encouraged you to apply to bank XYZ for that position.

Best of luck!

PS: also check off-cycle internships
