Multiple Accounts & Anonymous Posting ?
Maybe I'm noticing patterns where there aren't any (It's a professional hazard).
But, it seems to me that some people are abusing the anonymous posting/commenting feature by signing up for multiple accounts to discredit someone's posts/comments or to bolster their own. 2 observations.
1) Someone makes a post and multiple SBs follow immediately within an approx. 10 second window. I've noticed this is quite common.
2) Two anonymous accounts are involved in the same discussion who seem to use very similar language, syntax, and what not (same grammatical errors, similar vocab and style). For example, I disagreed with some anonymous comment. Then someone with a seemingly different profile (ie. Intern in PropTrad vs. Associate in IB) commented on my comment. Weird thing is that they both never capitalized any letters in their writing.
Coincidence? I noticed similar things happening often enough to be suspicious...
Not a coincidence. I've seen this happen on all controversial topics in the off-topic forum. Although I know for a fact that Intern in PropTrad is a crazy witch. They've had some f'd up topics/comments posted.
Any examples of comments/topics?
Maybe if you didn't post shitty takes anonymously, I'd have an easier time finding them
he is talking about Me! lol
Someone's feeling insecure. There have been multiple occasions where I noticed similar things.
The world doesn't revolve around you buddy.
I suspected the same thing. I think getting rid of anon posting/ commenting in the off topic forum would be a benefit to the community. It makes sense in industry forums, but not off topic
If I could extract IP address and/or location info of each post/comment, then I can easily build a program that links certain accounts suspected to be the same person.
Unfortunately, idk if that information is something I can get by parsing the HTML or whether I'd have to hack WSO database, which I wouldn't know how... (I'm willing to bet WSO is SQL injection proof)
Otherwise, I can try to build some complicated NLP program that statistically analyzes if certain posters are actually the same person. But who knows how long it takes to build that.
Anyways, I'm getting some cool ideas.
I know this is a finance website so you can talk a big game and get away with it but mate, IP address matching? Surely you know how many people have dynamic IP addresses and spoof location? Outta here with this nonsense
IP addresses wouldn’t be stored in an HTML document, it would pass through network requests in the headers (I doubt WSO is using GraphQL but it could be in the context if they were). I’m not sure how you would grab that information assuming the POST request hits WSO servers then the servers send that data back to the front end via some subscription (like Google Pub/Sub or Websockets), since I see new posts without refreshing the page.
So tbh- I have no idea. Also, I doubt WSO would store IP addresses in a database since there’s no reason to do so. They haven’t blocked the accountingmajor’s IP since he makes new accounts every other month- unless he uses something to bounce his IP around like someone else mentioned. But tbh... who puts in that much effort just to post here?
Anyway.. TLDR I don’t know how you’d grab that information from your end without access to WSO servers (then it would be easy)
Cringe tbh
I've said this more times than I can count. Nothing has changed. Not sure what else to say about it.
Agreed. I’ve seen you mention it before
hey, we hear you man...and I agree.
we are just absolutely swamped. There is a MAJOR back end migration coming (target date Aug 10) and it's not a simple solution to turn off anon posting in one specific forum.
We will get it done and clean some of this up.
Thanks for your patience, Patrick
The levels of having no life: - Level 1. Posting on WSO - Level 2. Posting in Off Topic Forum - Level 3. Posting anonymously in off topic forum - ... - Level 100. Sock puppet accounts for anonymous posting in off topic forum
Level 99: Interns and Prospects that provide IB rankings
What level would I be if I created a bot that creates multiple accounts and SBs all my comments?
I'm not gonna lie, as a techy, that's a pretty cool thing to build. If I were still in college, I actually might.
The sign-up form uses Google Recaptcha, so you'd need to create accounts manually. Not cool. Also, to give SBs, you need WSO credit, which means any account would have to make at least a few posts without looking like blatant spam.
This has been done before, many years ago...for the love of WSO, please don't do this. We can reverse it easily, but my team is already swamped.
level 101 - complaining about anonymous posting in the off topic forum with an anonymous account
I'm just here so I don't get fined
i think you're noticing patterns where there aren't any
Take comfort in knowing what a loser someone must be to switch from a pseudonym to an anonymous name or scondary account in order to post a comment.
FFS is all this because I made the factual observation that Asians lower their head to the bowl/ plate when they eat? I would have deleted it but now I don’t see why I should. There is nothing racist about what I said and I am seriously offended that I would be called one. There are no multiple accounts. There is no conspiracy code to decipher. No one is out to get you. Go. Get. Some. Fresh. Air. Please!
You didn't make a factual observation, you compared it to eating like a dog. If you knew a single Asian person you'd know that was RACIST AS FUCK.

ok. next time I will say Cat.
Really nothing wrong with what he said. It's a pretty established part of Asian culture. The thread was shitting on white people, I guess only that sort of racism is ok.
Okay Intern.
Neo-nazi says he's not racist
Well, maybe it’s because those Asians you observed were very careful about not spilling the food on themselves or make a mess? If you bend over a little while you eat, you are less likely to spill.
On the other hand, I have observed that white people are more likely to not wash their vegetables before consumption, wear their shoes on the bed, and fold bed sheets without being careful about them not touching the ground while doing so.
White people also generally have a less healthy eating habit. They tend to eat too much cheese when it is a well-known fact that too much dairy is bad for you. Their meals tend to be heavier and the meats they eat are very lacking in terms of flavor or seasoning. I never order chicken at restaurants that specialize in “western cuisine” because the chicken tends to be like rubber.
In addition, I noticed that bullying is a bigger part of the culture in white communities than it is in Asian communities. Also, it is white people who are generally more obsessed with race. Asians don’t care as much about someone’s race as whites do, generally speaking. Asians who are well-versed in world culture are much more likely to view individuals as individuals rather than as part of a race, whereas whites of the same standing are more prone to factor in race when viewing others.
For once, you make some sense here
Although I will say in some Asian countries, if you have a darker complexion, they stare. Whether that is out of curiosity or not, I am sure it's uncomfy for those people.
And IIRC, don't some Asian cultures value lighter skin?
sure - why then is then skin whitening, eyelid surgery and high nose bridge surgery so popular? in response to your eating / dietary comment I could say something in response but then will be deemed racist so I will just let the past 100 + days make the point for me.
Not going to comment on the rest of your post, which is 99% irrelevant to everything. It doesn't matter that white people might wear their shoes on the bed, like what the fuck lmao at least we don't get beat for not taking them off .1 seconds after we got inside.
However, I thought this part was funny. Not sure if you're just saying this to make Asians look better (you're an asian wommen, correct?) or if this is some poor attempt at white-knighting for the asian race, but Asians are pretty well known to be pretty racist overall. This racism can manifest itself in a variety of ways, but many Asians are racist against other Asians (Chinese vs South Korean vs Japanese) or against other races (blacks). Thanks for the chuckle.
This sounds like a vast over-generalization. I'd like to see some data on this please
how do you rationalise this? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/25/coronavirus-expos…
Yes its very annoying, sometimes I am not sure if Richard.3 is responding or not, but I have noticed patterns (of intelligence)
OP how do we know you're not a part of the problem
Cuz I don't post anonymously like some people? I mean there's this thing called a user name, which is already anonymous.
How much of a pussy do you have to be be doubly anonymous? Unless you're revealing some info about where you work or whatever.
OP - As I recall the original post was about American table manners and the fact that those ‘chimpanzees’ couldn’t even use a knife and fork. Didn’t hear you calling out the racism there?
Stop trying to pretend you didn't say anything racist. You ain't fooling anyone.
Quite frankly this kind of apologetic attitude is disgusting.
OP only cares when it's racism against Asians
I care when people are racist in general and refuses to accept they are.
As I've said before....
HEY HEY, HO HO, ANONYMOUS POSTING HAS GOT TO GO
Hey hey ho ho Nightman Cometh has to go
wow MEAN
Almost everyone hates the anonymous posting feature.
It seems the only reason for having the option is that people are worried someone will connect the dots across their posts and identify them.
Which doesn't seem like a good enough value for the cost. A lot of people, me included, feel the site quality is down substantially since anonymous posting began.
Let people figure out other ways to hide who they are. Its not that hard.
