Need advice/input on social aspect of financial professions
I’m a incoming college freshman and I’m currently having trouble deciding if I want to go into medicine or finance. In terms of content, I find both interesting and stimulating, however, I’m concerned that my skill set / personality may make succeeding in medicine easier.
Specifically, I’m concerned about networking, office culture and the social aspect of banking. I’m by no means socially inept or very weird but I’m not much of a smooth talker and I’m not very good at playing politics. Both of my parents work corporate jobs (one in finance) and they constantly talk about how sucking up to people is pretty much the only way to get ahead and to have stability in the industry. I’m willing to improve and learn as it’s still early but “networking” seems like a confusing concept to me and having to make connections to progress seems very risky to me.
Does anyone have any advice regarding this or any input if they’ve had a similar issue?
Yes, the Partners and MDs are usually the rainmakers. I think you should pursue what interests you overall.
