No Custom Excel Toolbar to get better at Model Tests

Incoming Analyst considering never customizing the excel toolbar so that I don't get overly reliant on my custom Alt+1, Alt+2 and instead go through the motions of Alt+H+B for borders so that when in model test settings I will be less thrown off and still comfortable in completing the assginment fast.

Curious if others recommend this advice, or think generally it doesn't make a difference / only a marginal improvement. Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your approach has merit, but it depends on your goals and the environment you'll be working in. Here's the breakdown:

  1. Custom Toolbar vs. Standard Shortcuts:

    • Customizing the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) can significantly speed up repetitive tasks, as it reduces the number of keystrokes required. For example, functions like borders, font color, or alignment can be assigned to Alt+1, Alt+2, etc., saving time over the long run.
    • However, relying solely on custom shortcuts can be risky in environments like model tests or new workstations where your custom setup isn't available. In such cases, knowing the standard shortcuts (e.g., Alt+H+B for borders) ensures you're not thrown off and can still work efficiently.
  2. Best Practice for Incoming Analysts:

    • A balanced approach is recommended. Familiarize yourself with the standard shortcuts (Alt+H+B, Alt+H+O+I, etc.) so you're comfortable in any setting. At the same time, use the QAT for your day-to-day work to maximize efficiency.
    • As highlighted in WSO threads, the QAT is a powerful tool for saving time, especially when you know which functions you use most frequently. For example, adding "freeze panes," "insert row," or "align objects" to your QAT can save seconds that add up over thousands of repetitions.
  3. Model Test Preparation:

    • Practicing with standard shortcuts during model test prep is a smart move. It ensures you're not overly reliant on custom setups and can adapt to any Excel environment.
    • Some WSO users suggest forcing yourself to use Alt navigation (e.g., Alt+H, Alt+N) for a few weeks to build muscle memory for standard shortcuts. This way, you'll be prepared for both custom and default setups.

In summary, your strategy of avoiding over-reliance on custom shortcuts is sound, especially for model tests. However, don't completely dismiss the efficiency gains of a well-thought-out QAT for regular work. A hybrid approach—mastering both standard shortcuts and leveraging the QAT—will make you a more versatile and efficient analyst.
