Old Doggo

My dog is 13 now and he can't stand on all fours for very long (he's a big dog). He doesn't appear to be in pain but he's experiencing discomfort and can't sleep well at night. There aren't any realistic medicinal options at this point. How would you guys navigate this? Can't imagine putting him down but I don't know if/when it makes sense to do that.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Cherish the Memories: Reflect on the good times you've had with your dog. As one user mentioned, "cherish the memories you had" with your pet. This can provide comfort during difficult times.

  2. Assess Quality of Life: Consider your dog's quality of life. If he is experiencing significant discomfort and his quality of life is deteriorating, it might be time to have a difficult conversation with your vet about the best course of action.

  3. Support from Community: Sharing your experience and seeking support from others who have been through similar situations can be helpful. As seen in the WSO threads, community support can be a source of comfort.

  4. Professional Advice: Consult with your veterinarian to understand all possible options and get professional advice tailored to your dog's specific condition.

  5. Emotional Support: It's important to seek emotional support for yourself as well. Losing a pet can be very challenging, and having a support system in place can help you navigate this tough time.
