Overtime league. Any college basketball fans?

Any college basketball fans here? Thoughts on the new Overtime league?

-100k salary to top hs players -Equity -100k for college if the player doesn’t make it pro - backed by melo, Durant and some other names

I love college basketball but with all of these other options starting to pop up, im curious to see what’s going to happen. There’s obviously a good chance that this goes belly up but I wouldn’t be surprised if more of these types of leagues start popping up.

First, I think these leagues can have success but it will be very tough. I'm sure there will be a few top HS players each year to do this or go the G-League route but will take a while to get more "mainstream" because some of these HS players need to see players from these leagues be successful in the NBA. Might be tough for a new startup league to survive during that time. And how is this different from what the G-league offers? Honestly asking because I believe it is very similar. On top of that the NBA is probably going to change the draft rules after the current CBA expires.

Second, I think college basketball has its base fans and will always remain that way. Fans are going to have the team(s) they route for whether its their alma mater, family school, location, etc. The NBA has way better talent and skill now and if that gap increases I don't think you'll see a huge change because of the already established fan base. A Duke bangwagon fan is going to still watch/follow them if they have 5 one-and-done guys on the court or 5 4th-years that are former 3/4-stars, same with Big Blue nation. Those are my thoughts on these leagues and college bball. Not to mention college basketball hands-down has the best tournament of all.

I think the biggest difference is that these kids will be playing and getting paid while in high school still. The intention, from what I could imagine, would be that they then progress to the g league instead of college and then on to the NBA. I think you have a good point too, the people who enjoy college basketball and specific schools will still watch and support it. I’m curious if this will equate to a large scale talent drain in the NCAA. I hope the situation is what you described in that a few top guys will leave for the paid leagues and the rest will stay. will be interesting to watch what happens though

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Seems like that would be more difficult to execute early on but possibly have more success down the road? Not sure, but that's my initial thought. That league and progress you mentioned would be a substantial change to the current process and will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out. My thoughts on the college fan base still holds. I'm sure there will be some talent drop off but there will always be players who develop late, slip through the cracks, get better with college coaching and just ultimately choose the more traditional route.
