Politics: Intentions versus Results

I have little doubt, that in many cases, people intend to "do good" via public policy. Unfortunately, the evidence seems to be that the hopes are a far cry from the reality. I'm going to compile a variety of resources, which explore how politics actually works in practice, as opposed to how we hope it to work in theory.

I think a lot of times there is very much a difference in objectives between the public and the government. It appears to me, at least, that often times the government is only concerned with the bottom line rather than solving the real problems. The problem of minimum wage that Dr. Sowell was talking about is a good example. Sure they raised minimum wages, but as he pointed out unemployment increased.

Yes, one of the themes that will run through these resources is that the incentives are often not aligned. Other themes, are that even when they are aligned, you will often have unintended consequences, informational problems, and a lack of ability to actually accomplish goals politically.

I fell that the unintended consequences are one of the major problems with political motivations. It seems that politicians are so concerned with what may happen that they get "gun shy" and fail to implement actions that will help to solve the problems. There's never a perfect answer. It's kind of like trading; if you made money today, someone else lost money.

Higher taxes will likely lead to more spending, not a smaller deficit, according to Milton Friedman. I think that advice is still as relevant today as it was at the time of this interview.
