Question for the gym monkeys

Last night I hardly slept and I had stomach ache all day. I decided to persevere and go to the gym anyway. It was back and bicep day, and I only managed three bicep exercises before I called it quits and left because of stomach pains and lack of sleep. My question is, was this workout a waste of time. Should I have just stayed home?

Amazingly I feel much better as soon as I get home

I would say it wasnt a waste of time. If it made you feel good then thats mission accomplished. But I would definitely try to prioritize sleep if I were you moving forward. Its hard to make gains when your body isnt rested.

Wouldn’t say so - personally feel like the most important part of gyming is that you show up. And then keep showing up.

Maybe the workout wasn’t very useful for your physique. What it was useful for is showing that you are the type of person that prioritises the gym and his physical fitness. I think that’s what allows you to get gains in the long run.

That being said health is still super important. If i’m feeling under the weather I normally just go and do some mobility excerises. Injury risk skyrockets whenever you’re working out while sick.

Maybe don't go to the gym, but do some light exercise.  Go walk several miles.  Stretch at home.  The important thing is keeping your schedule intact, because otherwise it becomes easier and easier to not go.  Working out while sick or injured is a great way to exacerbate a problem and should probably be avoided, and as long as you are deliberate in that your walk or light run or whatever is your exercise for the day, I think that counts.

Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and get through the workout. Fitness grinders who say sleep is for the weak are generally morons. On the other hand consistency is everything in fitness. The second you stop pushing weight you risk losing the habit. It’s not necessarily that this particular workout is going to be productive.

From a purely mental standpoint I prefer to view situations like this as a challenge. Something that tests how much you really want the end goal of working out or journaling or reading or whatever else it is. Those days when shit gets hard because you have a bunch of obligations and you crank out a few chapters or some heavy sets are what make all the other days easier. And they instill a certain confidence in getting shit done that’s really useful. My greatest fear is slipping into that zone where your mind consistently finds every excuse not to do challenging things. I’ve been there and it sucks and takes a toll on your self-confidence and self worth. It’s like the feeling of trying to quit cigarettes and waking up realizing you ruined your smoke free month drunk at the bar.

Depends on your definition of “hardly slept”.

5 hours sleep, instead of 7-8? Sure I’ll still go to the gym. But If I’m waking up 5 times during the night because of a stomach ache and having to shit my guts out every time, definitely going to pass on the gym in the morning
