I've seen Full Metal Jacket, but mostly forgotten it, I'm due a rewatch. Really want to see his other stuff, especially A Clockwork Orange. Have you also read the book?
Not wholly related to him, but he did mention this Polish film series called The Decalogue as the only masterpiece he could ever think of. Really hard to find on streaming though.
EDIT: nvm I've also seen The Shining which was great imo. Have also seen Spartacus but didn't enjoy it at the time.
The intro to Full Metal Jacket before they go to Asia is 10/10. Rest of the movie is kind of meh.
let us know your thoughts on a clockwork orange. it's a favourite of mine.
Thought Clockwork Orange was overrated.
Kubrick is truly amazing.
I would suggest to watch 2001 and Barry Lyndon next. 2001 is admittedly more opera than movie and, for this reason, best enjoyed in a cinema.
However, Barry Lyndon is one of Kubrick's most underrated pieces of work. Definitely not your usual history movie ...
what Is it you like about Barry Lyndon? I didn't get it at all. And very different from the normal spacey/dystopian stuff.
1. The cinematography: pay a little attention to the individual shots, most of them are modeled after paintings from the same period. Kubrick also used (for the time) extremely fast lenses to shoot scenes only with candlelight. Next to 2001, Eyes Wide Shut and Shining probably his most impressive movie from a visual standpoint.
2. The plot: it's essentially the story of an underdog hustling himself into 19th century high society with some really dark twists and turns. The pacing is faster and more modern than other historical movies. The only sad part about it is that the movie was essentially a waste product of Kubrick's attempt to make a Napoleon biopic (on a much grander scale) which unfortunately never materialized.
If you like Kubrick you NEED to watch 2001 and The Shining
Yeah The Shining is probably my favorite Kubrick film, I'm also a huge Jack Nicholson fan.
He suspiciously died right after Eyes Wide Shut. It was filmed in the real mansion of a very real, well-connected family of power brokers and financiers and contained a ton of symbolism. Interestingly, you should also look into the history of Nicole Kidman's father. It'll make you think!
Suspiciously had a heart attack as a man in his 70s who had been overweight for much of his life…
How he died isn't on its face what's suspicious, it was the timing. It was right after he showed a screening of the final cut of the film Warner Brothers, which they didn't like. They demanded he cut ~20-25 minutes from the film and he refused, citing his contract which explicitly gave him complete creative control. He then suddenly dies 6 days later, the cuts are made by WB, and the film is released. He was very clearly touching on some themes that, when you look at stuff like Jeffrey Epstein, are rooted in some degree of truth.
because I have a regional accent, a few weeks ago my friend commented that I speak like a droog... started rubbing his belly and saying "ooo me Gulliver". not sure wtf he was talking about but it was funny.
He's my favorite director. Definitely watch 2001 and Barry Lyndon next.
Eyes Wide Shut is awesome, and I watch it every year, a few weeks before Christmas.
Fantastic director - 2001: A Space Odyssey, Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining all unbelievable. The New York Philharmonic Orchestra puts on a series of events every year called The Art of The Score where they show a film and the orchestra plays the score live from the orchestra pit. Its an awesome event and my favorite film to ever experience in that format was 2001: A Space Odyssey (though John William's score from Jurassic Park this year was a close second).
