Seahawks Packers game...

The NFL needs to bring back the regular referees ASAP and also reverse the ruling on the final play of this game.
There must be a riot going on in Vegas right now. How I wish I were there right now to see the spectacles...or maybe I don't.

I haven't said a word about the officiating this year.....until now. That was horrendous. Will go down as one of the worst calls ever, if not the absolute worst. When do they start losing fans?

They lost me as an actual fan. These games are so different from normal football and it's making the regular season look like an absolute joke. The standings, the gameplay, and everything else are just distorted now to a point that it's actually hilarious. The only thing that makes me check box scores anymore is fantasy football, and even that is getting annoyingly boring now with the way teams are scoring and managing the clock. Unless it's an absolute home run touchdown, it's a total crap shoot as to what these guys are going to come back and say after looking under the hood on something like a goal line plunge or crucial 4th down. Just not what it used to be, and I think the NFL has no choice but to go for one of those "you get everything you want but give us something you don't care about so we can save face" negotiations with the officiating union. And that line about how all officials make mistakes and we'd still complain if normal refs were in... to me that never worked, but now it doesn't work for anyone. Things are just too ridiculous.

Couldn't agree more. If this play and the outcome if this game doesn't wake up Goodell/owners, I don't know what will. Pathetic.

This, I will now substitute the once 'wacky' college football until nfl gets their shit together. I'm also currently boycotting boxing after that fixed Pacquiao fight.

These refs are so far in over their heads its not even funny. Worse than the call at the end was the fact that it took such a long time to actually end it, and get the teams back on the field for the PAT. It was a joke. The problem is, its not like anyone is gonna stop watching football. We can all bitch and moan all we want, but the bottom line is no one is going to boycott the NFL. The refs have no leverage here.

Some of my favorite Twitter responses I've seen thus far..

"... still waiting for Ashton Kutcher to come running out of a van with a camera crew" "Upon further review, we'd better get the hell out of here." "Please let the refs emerge with two thumbs up and call a jump ball. Please. " "BREAKING: NFLRA demands one BILLLLLLLLION dollars." "Did the ref have Golden Tate in fantasy? #itsnotoutofthequestion" "Welcome to a special 3.5 hour edition of C'Mon Man..."

Side note: With Revis out for the year, I'm basically dead inside anyway.

I didnt even know what to think when I saw that play unfolding live before my very eyes.

That was the worst call I've ever seen. Might as well add the roughing the passer call that negated a Packers pick, the ridiculous PI on Shields where Rice hooked him with one arm and held his facemask with the other (with 30 yards for the first!!) and, just to be bipartisan, the PI on Chancellor that kept GB's touchdown drive going.

I saw a ton of Facebook statuses about people who weren't going to watch the NFL until Goodell started paying the real refs. Goodell is throwing the integrity of the game away for what amounts to pocket change on the NFL's bottom line...what a fucking douche.

And that folks was the closing performance for the scrubs....I mean those people who dress up as referees. Actuals in within 2 weeks the latest, although based on the firestorm the league will receive for this, I would not put it past this week.

I thought it was weird when Russell Wilson jumped on the ESPN set (I imagine uninvited) just as they were about to go in-depth about the botched call.

I can understand the call on the field, but it should have been sorted out and the final call should have gone to the head ref. I believe instant replay should have reversed the call on the field - there was conclusive evidence in my mind.

It is impossible to have a more climactic play in football to decide the outcome of the game: 4th down. Time expired. A fight for the ball in the endzone. There is not going to be a more decisive, outcome changing play than what happened tonight. This is the cherry on top of a horrible 3 weeks of officiating.

The NFL won't give in right now for 3 obvious reasons--the NFL games have been setting ratings records thus far this year, attendance is strong, and the controversy is creating a ton of buzz. Nobody is going to realistically stop watching because of the refs. In fact, some of the games--Redskins/Rams, for example--have gotten totally out of hand, making them very entertaining.

I think the NFL, in all honesty, is tickled pink about the situation.

This comment reminds me of the old saying, "There is no such thing as bad publicity". The more I think about it, the more I agree with you that this probably isn't too concerned about this in the short run. However, I do think consistent controversy will ruin the business in the long run. The NBA is starting to lose long time fans (at least in my circle) because of the way the league is run even though, supposedly, ratings are still strong.

I agree it was a blown call, and the refs are highly questionable at best.

That said - the game didn't need to come down to one call. Bulaga got dominated all night, and they never gave him any help via TE or RB. Second, Jennings has to know you don't try to catch that ball, you knock it down. THIS is the reason you don't catch it.

I don't think there is a lot of incentive for the owners (keep in mind its them, not Goodell, who has the decision power here) to "give it all up" to the original refs as blackhat suggested. The league is still seeing record viewership and revenues. We have all been whining for the past 3 weeks about the poor refs, and yet we're all still watching..

In related news, $150M-$250M in MNF bets shifted:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8422934/seattle-seahawks-vs-green-bay…

Quote: "Most of the customers in the sports book were not happy with the final call," said John Avello, director of the race and sports book at the Wynn in Las Vegas. "The shift was 100 percent. After the (Seahawks) score, all bets were reversed."

So how much more exactly are the refs asking for, and what is their normal pay? It's hard to side with individuals who work for 10 hours a week, and get paid 30-40k I'm assuming. Curious about the situation. Since the NFL makes billions every year, I'm guessing this has to be more principal based, i.e. the refs can't hold us hostage and expect 10k raises every time they strike.

Refs make $149,000 and want an increase to $189,000 by 2018. http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-09-25/the-nfl-fiasco-why-refe…

They want to just get paid sight unseen 150k a year, without being evaluated. I mean everyone is just a greedy little b&*( in this scenario. Goodell, the refs, f em all.

Whgm45:
I put this on Goodell, what an absolute douche for allowing this to happen. Worst commissioner ever.

Nope - that goes to Gary Bettman.

Right now, I'm just waiting until a Brady, Brees or Rodgers (Basically, any big name superstar) goes down with a season/career ending as a result of poor officiating to see the NFLPA sue the League for an unsafe working environment to bring back the original refs.

That Packers cornerback clearly made the interception in the end. And even worse, that Seahawks receiver shoved a Packers safety to "catch" the ball. Something tells me, though, that the ref who made the call just called it a touchdown simply to avoid getting heckled by the fans in Seattle.

I've been watching football since John Elway beat the Packers to win his first, but this is kind of a disgrace. And I want to stop watching now.

//www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/sohow-about-those-replacement-refs

I did a blog post about it, for those that are interested.

One note that I'll add here that I wouldn't want on the front page (so as to not tarnish the front page content):

Anyone who is siding with ownership and taking some hardline "always sign with management" stance needs to shove it up their ass. Get you head out of the fucking clouds and be a fucking fan. These games are littered with fucking bullshit calls, bullshit flow, and (literally) refs that were cut from the lingerie football league due to incompetence.

You are not going to get some sort of fucking prize for being anti-union in this case. Seriously, shut the fuck up about it. Some Partner from KKR isn't going to show up at your doorstep and give you an offer because you think that way. No, you sound like a stiff who'd rather read purchase agreements on a Sunday than watch a great football game. You are not a master of the universe, you are a giant douche. Get your shit straight.
