Yeah I heard they are really bad.

Seed oils themselves are not actually bad for you. There are plenty of factors of seed oils that are healthy for you, and more importantly there's no actual causal study proving anything about seed oils. It's merely positing until we see real evidence.

The problem for most people is the volume of seed oils they consume, and how they consume seed oils. Seed oils are a key component in fried foods because of their cost and high burn point, making them great for fried foods. But this is just correlation. We know fried foods are bad for you, but whether the seed oils are the cause or(more likely) being deep fat fried is the issue is just theory.

I would object to the idea that any food is inherently bad or good, just that moderation is necessary. If you eat fried food maybe once a week, you're not going to have any major lasting negative health effects. If you eat it every day, then you will.

Yeah you are right.

"The real danger is ultra-processed food, not the oil itself

Most seed oils are consumed through:

  • Fried fast foods
  • Processed snacks
  • Packaged foods

These foods are unhealthy for many reasons (salt, sugar, low fiber, additives)—not because of seed oil alone."

The key to anything in diet is moderation. Protein is probably the most important and most neglected macronutrient, but in excess it can be massively detrimental to your digestive tract and lead to imbalances in your other areas of diet. You can eat some processed foods, as long as it's in moderation.

Generally speaking, my rule is 80/20. 80% clean, healthy, low processed/unprocessed foods following a good balance of macronutrients, and 20% other stuff. As you get older, you'd probably do better to go to something like 90/10, but ultimately living life means sometimes you do things that aren't the healthiest for you in the name of having fun. I'd argue that drinking is probably more detrimental to your health than eating a burger once a week, yet people still drink.

You’re a bot now lol

You're right in that it's not seed oils themselves and also below about moderation in everything. The part that is bad for you and causes this inflammation is PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids). Seeds oils are a high source of PUFAs. That has to be watched. Also I cannot for the life of me see why anyone would want to cook something (not fry) in anything but butter/ghee/tallow/avocado/olive oil. They're infinitely better and also taste great.

The anti-seed oil movement is only really prevalent in the west. In Asia, it's still used as the main (peanut oil, canola oil, etc) and many Asian countries surpass the US on life expectancy.

But as you mentioned, the focus may be more on the processed foods side.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with seed oils and there is no evidence to suggest that there is.

The whole idea is spread by terminally online wellness influencers who are trying to sell you their weird ass supplements. Ask one of them to define what "inflammation" even is. Don't fall for the bullshit.

I assume you know that the problem with anti-vaxxers isn't that they'll get sick, but rather how their sickness impacts the rest of (responsible, non-dickhead) society?

If we had a way of keeping anti-vaxxers from getting any viral related medical treatment at all that would be lovely too, but it wouldn't solve the underlying issue that it allows a disease to mutate and thus keep spreading.

Actually there are a lot of issues with seed oils.

The biggest one is that they materially throw off the ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s we consume. Traditionally humans consumed omega 3s and 6s at a 1:1 ratio, but this ratio is now 20:1 in favor of omega 6s. Omega 6s are pro-inflammatory, increase your appetite, and increase weight. They impact metabolism, making it harder to burn calories. They also crowd out the absorption of omega 3s, which are needed for heart health, cancer prevention, cellular dynamism, and brain function. Most Americans are omega 3 deficient, in large part driven by seed oils and corn-based animal feed (which impacts the lipid profile of the meat you eat). You can chart adoption of seed oils with growth in obesity, mental health disease, cancer rates, and altheimers/dementia, and the correlation is clear.

And for the record, inflammation can be measured by things like CRP, Sed Rate, and cytokine markers. These metrics correlate with heart disease and cancer.

In summary - eat more fish!

When it comes to diet, I've completely given up listening to people online. Everyone seems to have "the truth" of that one thing you should cut out that will change your life. In reality, just try to cut out processed foods, eat a whole diet (no, that doesn't mean just eat fucking meat and eggs, and also doesn't mean just eat vegan), and work out a few times a week. Has gotten way too overcomplicated.

Overcomplication is the point.  People, and Americans in particular, are stupid and gullible.  Make something overly complex and they'll distrust it, because they don't understand it.  If they distrust it, they'll be fair game for an alternative that bills itself as simple.  Plenty of grifters out there, and anyone selling you a product or even advice who doesn't have a medical degree is a grifter.
