Stuck in retail banking hell… need to get out. This is a cry for advice.
Doom post but I’ll try to keep it brief.
I am not being intellectually challenged in any way shape or form, I am not utilizing my bachelors degree, and on top of that there are quite literally no transferable skills to any sort of analytical role within finance. The longer I wait the more opportunities fly by me. What do I do to land a position or internship or anything out of horseshit retail? What can I even say when I’m asked behavioral questions during an interview if I can even secure one? That I helped make new checking and savings accounts? That I explained APY on a CD? That I helped out an old lady set up mobile fucking banking? How I quite literally never overcame a challenge at work because I’m overqualified and it’s not difficult at all. There’s no teamwork, there’s no leadership, there’s no problem solving, there’s no adaptability, there’s literally nothing at my current position. I’m literally a teller with an office. I’ve came to the conclusion that being blunt and saying “I am not challenged at my current position please challenge me I’ll work for free” might be a better response to any and all questions to not waste the hiring managers time by coming up with bullshit they don’t want to hear on the spot.
I understand this field is competitive, I understand I may sound bitter, I understand that even having a job in this market is good but I’m just feeling so stuck. The longer I wait, the older I get, and the more stuck I feel with opportunities being snatched up by fresh undergrads. I’m really trying to keep my head up guys, but it seems that the odds are stacked against me and frankly, I don’t see a way out of this without at least an MBA from an okay school. Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks.
Out of curiosity how did you end up in this job?
I needed to stay afloat after graduating undergrad in September 2024.
I worked as a teller part time during undergrad. I quit when I graduated and moved back home with no job offer. Fast forward and now I’m at a BB.
Where do you live? Location has a lot to do with your opportunities. I’d target any type of credit analyst role and work my way up from there.
What's your undergrad GPA?
You could study for the CFA exams - they are pretty difficult though. If you're interested in investment management.
Hey bro at least you found WSO - you're on the path now.
